People shouldn't be complaining about server capacity and that they couldn't access the site, clearly 100,000 people did manage it and that's all that matters as that's all that was available. Would you be that much happier if you saw a page that said 'Sorry you were unsuccessful, good bye'??

Madness! As for phoning them and demanding one at $100, what a fool.

Right, we should all complain so they just give up on the idea of trying to give people great deals all together. After all, if I couldn't get one it is unfair that they offered the deal at all

Not getting a $100 360 didn't hurt anybody, you wouldn't even have the chance to get one if Amazon wasn't nice enough to offer the deal in the first place...I really don't see why people are angry at Amazon about it.

The point is that if they weren't prepared to handle the server load this would cause and keep things running smoothly, they simply shouldn't hold the promotion. They could have just had a standard draw, one entry per person. Sure, it's not as exciting and not as good from a marketing standpoint, but at least everyone has a fair chance. Not just the people who get in the "back door" would get it, and they wouldn't have so many people angry at them.

I don't care about not getting the 360 for $100. I know I had almost no chance anyway. But at least I had a chance. The way things turned out, I had ZERO chance and that's what I'm angry about.

So yes, people should write them and complain. They are obviously going to have to re-think this idea because it didn't work. They didn't prepare properly for it and not everyone gets a fair chance to win.

-edit-

whats that supposed to mean?

It means that lately, all I read in forums are people complaining and complaining, there are hardly ever any positive comments, just a bunch of kids complaining how they got "screwed" over

Maybe you don't realize that amazon.com has been doing these weekly promotions for a long time now, problem is, most people don't want the products, so their bandwith hasn't been like this. Everyone in their mothers apparently wanted a 360 for a $100. Even people NOT allowed to be able to purchase it (you), so not only did they have americans trying to log into the site, they had people from toehr countries hogging up the bandwith.

So you're right, they didnt expect 10 million nerds to log into something and try to get it, all of whom seem to use tabbed browsing and opened up multiple tabs, thereby flooding their servers even more.

It's like when a new software program comes out, and people complain that they aren't maxing out their downloads. Well sorry for them, but they cant handle the sheer amount of people all trying to get the same thing at once. Have you ever gone on a Digg.com article and try to read the article from the main source, and then realize that their servers have crashed because of the amount of users all trying to view it at once? Do you complain then? Send them a nasty email saying "BUT I DESERVE THIS, I STAYED HERE FOR HOURS WAITING TO READ THIS ARTICLE!"

No, of course you do not. I bet you haven't been to amazon.com after this, because if you had, you would see there is yet another 4-deal thing. It ends on Tuesday, and you can purchase on the 30th, which is next thursday.

Again, the problem isn't them, the problem is the amount of people who wanted that cheap 360. I was included in that, and so was my father, and so was my brother....we all didn't get one, that's how life is. Run a business, get "Dugg" and see if you make it, because I bet your servers would crash as well, when the "deal of the year" comes up.

You know, life is not fair.

And I will say that this was clearly not Amazon's fault. They said they would sell 1,000 Xbox 360's for $100, and they did. The only reason why people had trouble getting through was because so many people knew about. Probably the people that had the best chance to get it were the people whose Internet connection is closest to Amazon's. Amazon had the bandwidth for 1,000 people buying all at once, but not 1,000,000.

Chances are, had everything worked properly, you would have refreshed the web browser one second and saw they were not selling yet, then refresh it again and see they were sold out. In that case, only the people with the lowest latency who were fast clickers and refreshed at the exact instance would have gotten it.

I tried connecting myself at that time just to see if it would be possible to get one, and I couldn't. But I laugh at all the kids who just knew they were going to get a 360 for $100, and especially the ones that are going to try calling Amazon and demanding one!

I know life is not fair but does not mean we should get back at amazon for not being prepare for this promotion. It's not fair for us but we can make it unfair for amazon.

According to that logic, the kids that did the shootings at Columbine did the correct thing then. "Life isn't fair to us, so we must make life unfair for others." :x

I was thinking about boycotting the website but your thinking is too much. Killing is always wrong!!!! I was never thinking about that. We need to boycott Meshuggah for trying to make us look like killers.

there is an "ignore" feature here on neowin :D I never said you were a killer, I was merely showing you how your self-serving logic is completely flawed. I don't understand how you can continue to even support your idea. There were only a thousand of them, I mean come on, just freaking think about it. By the way, when was the last time you purchased an item on Amazon.com? I hadn't purchased anything in about 2+ years, so this wouldn't help them, as they are losing money on this console, and I wouldn't plan on buying anything from them again anytime soon.

Boycott Meshuggah, he is clearly an evil entity out to destroy The World of Complaining Americans, who each think they are god's gift to mankind. :p

As good as the deal was, the odds weren't in our favour. Some people had faster connections and/or lived closer to the Amazon.com servers. That, or it was a massive publicity stunt to get hits.

I'm using it right now. I got a Microsoft keyboard and mouse 6000 series. I was going to buy tables and chairs for my kitchen but not anymore. I was going to get a Sharp 42' Aqua with my Xbox360 but I'm just going to best buy to get it. Just over $2000 amazon lost from me. The only thing they had to do is to setup more servers for that promotion.

I was upset with you Meshuggah because comparing my thinking to Columbia shoot are 2 completely different thinking. Thats like saying Bush to Hilter.

Is everyone really suprised they didnt get one, i mean really...this was a huge deal and yes 1000 is alot of consolses but when there are probably millions of people logging onto their site, its a drop in the bucket....congrats on thoe lucky few but really, goto microcenter and you can get a core for $199.99

Just be happy that amazon can run things like this with the x360 as we all know it will be a long time before we see things like this with the wii or ps3...

Hmm, for 99% of the people was not able to get to the site so they really did not give 1000 xbox 360 for $100. If most of the people cant reach it then there not doing the promotion. Read my Best Buy thing.

You got to understand that if amazon is going to do something like this then get everything ready but they did not do that. That's like if Best Buy was giving the PS3 but not having any of the front doors open. People would say why is it close and then when the doors do open it's sold out. People will complain because they could not get one and say it was a scam. Best Buy would reply, are back doors were open. If amazon can't keep the front doors open then they should not be doing this type of business.

I liked your analogy.

Okay, ACTIONpack serously.... stop your ****ing bitching. You can't prove they didn't sell 1000 and you have no reason to bitch about not getting one. You do realize if this were 50 years in the future when we have servers that can handle millions of people constantly refreshing a page theres still a 99% chance you won't get one. They OFFERED YOU A CHEAP SYSTEM, and you did not win get over it. Serously how can you possably bitch about such a thing...

Well lucky few who went through the back... bestbuy has the right to sell their items however they want... **** they can lock all the doors and shove the 360 right in your face and laugh at you if they want... then give it to the guy behind you in line and tell you to get away from their store... of course they wouldn't do that...

Firstly, best buy... hdvt.... might wanna do some research :). Also, you prove to me that if there was no lag that you would have gotten a 360, then you can bitch. You have to realize they arn't going to spend money just to basicly give away xbox's more efficently.(Not to mention the fact there simpley isnt the technology out there to handle millions of people constantly refreshing.) If you think thats reason enough not to offer the deal at all your a very seflish person, and need to grow up. Yes i was at my computer on amazon.com from 1:00PM (Est) to 2:00PM (Est) and I didn't win... natrually, i was upset...but what am i going to do? They had an offer and i missed out... oh well I bought my first xbox at retail price like everyone else... you should have realized once you saw the promotion that hey your being given an opportunity to get a great system for $200 less than the retail price... you will proablly not get one but hey if you do you do thats great... but no you expect one to be given to you simply because your you? Hey tell ya what next time you should just call amazon in advance and tell them to ship it to you with 1 night shipping for free a week before the promotion item goes on sale...

It is a promotional offer offered to you... just because you didn't get one doesn't mean they did somthing wrong. In all serousness amazon could take your specific order and just cancel it if they want... they have the right to offer any promotions they want and make them avable to whoever they want... it's their merchindice

Thats like saying Bush to Hilter.

Thats already been compared :p.

Well the server never went down to my knowledge, it just got really slow and people thought it went down because they were impatient or had a low timeout on their browser. I had two computers up and hit refresh on one at 10:56 and the page finally loaded at 10:59 and I refreshed another at 10:58 and the page came up at 11:02. The servers worked, they were just really slow.

So the analogy would be like Best Buy having a giant revolving door and next to it a small door that only fit one person through at a time. The majority of the people ran for the giant revolving door and got stuck because they were impatient, but if you had your timing right you could have got one by going through the small door.

I noticed the servers seriously bogging down at 10:50 and it was obvious to me that the trick would be to get the timing of the refresh right. The door wasn't hidden in the back, it was just hard to be one of the first few in it.

Regardless, it was still very generous of Amazon to offer the deal in the first place

Meh, it sucked that their servers were completely overloaded for like 10-15 minutes, but supposedly the stock sold out in a few seconds anyway. Anybody who thought they were going to get a 360 was kidding themselves, there were only 1,000 and the info about the promotion was spread all over the web.

Yeah, I didn't get one. I didn't expect I would. When I hit refresh at 11 (12 my time), it froze for about 3 minutes and when I got to the page it said that it was sold out. Oh well. Worth a try.

Nah, the trick wasn't to hit refresh at the right time.

The trick was to have already logged into your account, and be using https:// instead of http://
