Thoughts about 11.22

Recommended Posts

Well tomorrow (Nov. 22) is the day XBL launches their media service. What impact do you guys think this will end up having on XBL at first? Will it even be worth trying to download anything the first day...or even for a few days after the launch? I'm sure they have added a lot to their server farm for this, but I have a feeling it will be very slugish at the start.

I know they have had small clips of what will be available, but has anyone come across a full list of the shows and/or movies that will be downloadable starting tomorrow?

Will this be Gold only? Hope not...

No, you will be able to download the content with an Xbox Live Silver subscription as well.

Jackass's on it, so all is good as long as its not censored like on dvds.

Southpark is also on it. It will not be censored but it will fully support Parental Controls and Ratings for parents that wish to implement them for their kids.

Great.... so basically this service is just another iTunes, only avalible to North America and won't come out in any other continent....

It is coming to other Continents, but no timetable/ETA of when.

Is it HD content?

Yes. Both SD and HD content will be available. Also, if you purchase something in HD you will automatically get access to the SD version as well (for quicker downloads if you're in a hurry or something).

I'm very excited about this new Video Marketplace. It will save me runs to Blockbuster when I have a group of friends over and we're bored/in the mood for a movie. Also, it will allow me to watch HD-quality movies without having to purchase the HD-DVD Drive (I'm waiting a bit on that purchase until HD-DVD Movies decrease in price).

So its like netflix but only no mailing of the movies? and is it going to have new just released on dvd movies?

Exactly. Yes, newly released movies should be available, much like they are at NetFlix or your local BlockBuster or even your On-Demand Movie channel on Cable etc.

i wonder what pricing will be like...and i wonder how good the video quality will be.

Pricing will be "competitive", most likely around $4/rental. Video quality will be 480p for Standard Definition versions and 720p for High Definition versions.

bah.. it'll take forever to download any movie on my crappy canadian 1.5mbps adsl.

True, but know that you don't have to wait for the whole download to finish before you start watching it. You just have to download until it's "Ready To Play", at which point you will be prompted that you can start watching what's been downloaded already and have it continue downloading in the background.

The Xbox 360 calculates when a download is "Ready To Play" by seeing exactly when you can start watching an active download so as to not interrupt your viewing.

Definite time saver. :)

How much space will these movies take? With the small size of the hard drive on the 360, I'm afraid that I'd have to wipe all of my demos just to watch a movie.

wow they have 47 movies up already...and only a few of them are HD.

V for Vendetta for example is 132 minutes long and comes in at a massive 6.1gb in filesize. costs 480 points for HD and 320 for SD.

Edit: another cool thing is going through certain menus for tv shows it totally reskins everything to match the show. For example, under VH1, Hogan Knows Best, It puts the logo in the background and changes the whole color scheme.

This is the problem, Apple said exacly the same about TV Shows/Movies on iTunes around a year ago but it still hasn't been done :(

Well, I could see myself using this alot, since I cancelled my Netflix account and I'm used to Comcast's On-Demand service. Definitely provides the 360 with the whole gambit (games, movies, TV shows, etc).

My only concern is that MS keeps this thing updated. In 2006-2007, people lose interest so quick with stuff, I'm thinking that new movies/TV shows will need to be added on a consistent basis. I see they have "Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip" which is a great show in my opinion, but it also means that NBC is on board with this. So, hopefully we get The Office, Heroes, and other content as well.

PS - For some reason, I thought there was going to be a second dash update? I guess I heard wrong?

For 480 points, does that BUY de movie or it's only a loan like any video store? How long do you get to keep it before it auto-delete?

I'm waiting for the 100GB HDD..... Oh and maybe a little HDMI cable!! :)

Movies are rent only, tv shows are for keeps.

Movies can be watched an unlimited number of times the first 24 hours. Plays after that period will cost the same as the initial download, although the movie data isn't necessarily deleted. You can keep the movie data on your drive up to 14 days without re-downloading it.
