Some games don't play full screen

Recommended Posts

I only have 3 XBOX360 games at this time but 2 of them display in a border widescreen mode (Gears of War & Saints Row) which fulls only half the screen in the centre. I tried on a similar 19" widescreen in my Parents room and its displays the same, is this normal? The other game i have (Dead or Alive 4) displays full screen so does that mean the other two are widescreen only games?

I'm not making a big fuss about it, just wanted to see if many other gamers have the same display mode on these games as i have.

Thanks.

That is because (i assume) you're playing it on a 19" monitor which isn't widescreen and some games will fill stretch to the screen while others will just put borders in. This was one of the reasons i scrapped my VGA cable and purchased a HDTV.

Are you using the VGA cable?

If yes, then it's a square pixel issue and I don't think much can be done about it.

If not, then no it shouldn't have borders on a widescreen.

Yes i am using the VGA cable. It doesnt explain why DOA4 is full screen and the others are not. My monitor isnt widescreen but the one in my parents room is and connect via VGA and it was the same issue. I may consider a bigger monitor in that case and connect via HD cables. I have my 1280x1024 res.

because some games are widescreen only, and some games support 4:3. Not every game supports both 4:3 and 16:9 so some games like you are finding out will play in letterbox format.

No the xbox doesnt support 1680x1050, your monitor will have to do the scaling from 1280x720 which degrades image quality.

Ideally the res you need is 1280x720 or 1920x1080 as they are the proper native HD resolutions, the max middle range res is 1366x768 so if you can, aim to get one of those 3 resolutions native.

The res of the 19" widescreen is 1440x900. i think i fixed it on my normal monitor by switching the video in the dash from normal--->widescreen and the game was playing in full screen but it scretches the image i think., I have this feeling that the quality has degraded since i started playing from normal to widescreen or unless it was just me, Gears of Wars looked slightly different like its running at a lower res or something.

I have been thinking about a 24" for awhile now just trying to figure out which is the best to go for and worth the money since they are ?600+ and are not cheap!

In that case youll have to use the resolution of 1280x768 on a 1440x900 widescreen as they are both 16:10 resolutions and thats the only 16:10 resolution the xbox supports, if you use one of the 16:9 resolutions like 1280x720 then it will look stretched.

...But on the other hand the stretching is very minimal, and easy to put up with (I do.)

I guess you are right. The main dash looks like it has been zoomed in or something but doesnt look any different in terms of colour. I think i remember that i tried Saints Row come to think of it and the quality really did look different. I will put up with GOW easily as i rather enjoy it full screen and not half the screen size (like all PS1 & PS2 used to look like).
