[PHP] spaces in filenames with exec()

My mate who is a php noob is trying to exec() something on windows XP with a space in the directory name, EG. C:\program files\whatever.exe, but whenever he tries php will try to execuite C:\program.

He's tried putting the whole filename in a variable and making exec() execute it, but it still won't work.

Tried using quotes? or even old style "c:\\progra~1\\"?

he said he has tried quotes in all possible variations, but not the other one :p he will try that at home

u need double slashes

eg

"c:\\Program Files\\7-zip\\7z.exe\"

also, you can use backticks as an alternative to the exec function
