has anyone tried the vga -> dvi -> hdmi connector?

Recommended Posts

I already have the vga cable, and I have spare vga -> dvi laying around thanks to pc video cards. The tv only supports 720p from vga and does not have a dvi connection. I was wondering if anyone had any luck with then converting it to HDMI for 1080p?

you have to be careful with converters. Especially digital converters as there tends to be some crazy delays that happen as a result of the required DSP to make the hardware possible. Spending more on the hardware will probably fix this problem... but i know i've had problems with it in the past. Sound sync issues come to mind..not to mention gamepad/video sync issues which can make gaming very frustrating.

I think you can get a VGA->HDMI converter and I've read a few posts here of people who have done it and say it looks great.

As for gaming, the handful of games I've tried at 1080p didn't look as good (to me on my screen anyway) then they did in 720p mode. I think this is due to a change in anti-alias settings between the two formats to compensate for the frame rate. However, it is always good to have the 1080p option available as you never know what game will be absolutely beautiful on that mode. Also, if you have the HD-DVD addon then 1080p would be a must.
