360 overheating?

Recommended Posts

I'd say its a 1 in 6 failure rate, which is high. Anywho, they don't overheat. If it does, its defective.

Rofl...are you kidding me. Out of the 7-8 million that are out there being used, there are probably at most about 100,000 that were defective. ~1.4%, which is about what MS says the level is at (they've said it's well under the 3% failure rate for electronics). You just hear about the defective ones a lot more than you hear about the ones that aren't defective. Mind you I'm just spewing numbers, but 1 in 6 is bogus - it's more like 1 or 2 in 100. And it's probably much less than that now that they've worked out most of the problems.

Anywho, I got mine on New Year's this year, and it overheated once - I got overexciting and let it sit on a carpet when I played my first game. Needless to say I immediately moved it and have had no problems ever since then.

Oh, and about the loudness, I guess my 360 is somewhat loud especially when playing GoW, but in all honesty, that gets drowned out easily when you start playing. I never notice how loud or quiet my console is except for when I first boot it, and when I go to turn it off. It's a nonissue to me.

I also have my console standing vertically next to my monitor and speaker and have had no problems with that.

With my 360, the fans aren't loud at all really, but the DVD drive is when it's spun up to max speed - obviously it only does this when you're in a game, not when you're watching a movie etc. It really doesn't bother me at all because when I start playing games I don't realise it because either my TV volume drowns it out or I'm too into the game to be aware of background noise.

Well, I've had mine since March, and I get more than occasional disc read error, plus a rather strange rendering delay when loading a level. I thought it was just a PGR3 issue, but not its appearing in GOW too. It'll render the map fine, but the smaller details will be missing (dirt on windows for example) and then I'll notice those pop in 2-3 seconds later.

thats what my problem is. after 2-3 hours of continous play the game starts to take longer to render maps. it gets quite annoying.

grrr :p I can't decide.. I'm so tempted to order one :p

Anyone have any idea when the redesigned ones with the smaller cpu are due to appear? - I realise its just probally me being paranoid and yes people who have broken consoles post more than those that don't - But the posts of people on there 3rd/4th/5th consoles on xbox.com and youtube give me nightmares about spending ?300 on a system

if they are on there 3rd to 5th xbox , chances are its something they are doing. the odds of that being a factory problem are nearly impossible.

as much as I'd like to believe that, its pretty hard when pretty much every forum I visit has people with overheating 360's and consoles with random 3 red lights of death, even if they have treated it like a god.

Its annoying since I'm getting a HDTV soon and want to have a HDTV console on it :(

Anyway, apologizes to the thread starter for derailing the thread a bit here :(

you bet! that reminds me of a case of freaking idiot (yes I said IDIOT because that's what that guy was) who was on his 4th console replacement and CS was about to get him the 5th one and so somebody decided to ask the guy if will agree if CS could send a technician to deliver the system and at the same time take a look at his playing environment, the guy said it was ok with him.

the technician drops by his apartment and the first thing he notices is that the guy has a fridge near by the area where the guy plays, he takes a look a the power circuit and finds out that the fridge and the Xbox 360 were BOTH plug into the same circuit using an extension cord! duhhhh!!!

and to make things even worse the moron had removed the ground pin from the three-pronged plug to make it fit into a non-grounded outlet.

this is something that happens every one and single at the CS support centers at MS and many other companies around the world... :pinch:

Thats pretty funny, to be honest i have my x360 in an entertainment center with a media center PC, an AMP and VHS player and have yet to get it to over heat ( knock on wood)...go ahead and make the purchase...if you are really that worried get the extended warranty :)

Well this is reassuring :)! All of my consoles have gone in a entertainment center but seeing as my monitor does 1080p and is (at the moment) the only thing capable of HD, I will play it on my PC Monitor so it will be going at the side of my Monitor and into a Surge protector :).

You have to figure that in forums you are going to see (stupid people) + (defects) ... instead of just factory defects. I don't think I can even count the amount of people who don't have them in open air environments, or hooked up with 1000x other things on a cheap extension cord.

I went and purchased one of those entertainment surge protectors and have my Xbox360, Wii, PS2, surround and HDTV all on the same protector. Never once had a problem with any device. My Xbox360 does get a bit hot when playing long sessions, however I've never once had a problem with it. Then again, it's been sitting in an entertainment unit since the moment I've brought it home!

I actually had a 360 die (3 red lights) on me after about 9 months of use. But it happened right after a nasty brown-out that freaked out my second computer (not on a UPS) and my roommate's computer (wouldn't turn on immediately afterward and still has some "issues") and killed a subwoofer. So while it wasn't my fault, it certainly had some provocation.

I'd say that, like any expensive piece of electronics equipment, you need to make sure it's connected to a properly grounded outlet, not chained with too many devices, and ideally behind a reasonable surge protection system. Of course having a brown-out occur while you're using it isn't really something you can do much about, but in my experience those are extremely rare.

Fortunately, MS replaced my unit for free (since they extended the warranty on all consoles before a certain date by a year) and did a great job taking care of it. So far my replacement unit is working great, as is my other 360. In fact, my Wii has now locked up more times than any of my 360s ever have! And I actually had to unplug that thing to get it to restart when it froze.

That is still one to many.

The fact that people who brought boxes in August(and yes looked after them) and having to send them back already is madness.

I think I'm just gonna have to suffer until the redesigned ones are released

in that case you'll have to wait at least 6 months more if you live in NA and even more if you live in EU... :shifty:

and good luck with that if you're planning to wait as the plan is to mix them up all together to prevent people from knowing about which unit is the one carrying the CPU build on the 65nm process as that will slow down the sales of the console...   :p

Oh but Spartan, since you our only insider - I ask you - there must be some way of telling the two apart?

of course you can! :woot:

they easiest way to tell apart is to stick your tongue inside the I/O connector... if it tastes like tacos the unit is from Mexico and if it tastes like rice the unit is from China...  :p

muahahahahahahahaaaa!!!

The 65nm ones are not guaranteed to not have any issues, I bet they will be just the same. Sure it's less heat but who knows if it will fix it or if other issues will crop up. I have already waited over a year for a 360 so I cannot wait any longer :).

Mine does it from the beginning, I'm wondering if it might be a harddrive related issue (caching?). Are you able to pull it out and see if it helps? I feel like I'm going to break my 360 when I do, so I haven't tried :p

thats what people said about Halo 2 on the Xbox, but it even does it on my 360 so I really dont see it being a hard drive issue. just has way too much stuff to load in that short load screen.

maybe we can be a bit more understanding of people who need to fit their consoles into small spaces shared by many appliances? sure, mine's a in a study with only a computer on a big pwer surge strip, but not everyone's can/wants to do that.

anyway, i don't find the 360 overheats at all. i occasionally get error 74's, but those clear up with a restart.

If your 360 is locking up constantly (but works fine sometimes) can you get a trade in?

My 3rd 360 has had some lockup issues (don't call me an idiot now *cough spartan cough* because I'm on my third, I've really had some bad luck with 360's). It is well ventilated (standing on a hard wood floor in front of nothing in the basement), but I get constant lockups espically when trying to play games online. By far, this is the most annoying 360 issue I've had so far.

Is it supposed to "buzz" when it starts up also? It gets really loud, even over the sounds coming out of the speakers.
