Blocking Adds Is Now Theft

Recommended Posts

wow, theft?

i really hope sites don't start using that. however, on the other hand, i understand sites need to make money. so if things are going to work out, there needs to be a compromise. i think people will agree that popups/popunders/etc have gotten way to obtrusive and in-your-face. i wouldn't mind supporting a site w/popups if it was small, and easily closable (ie., doesn't spawn more popups, etc)

I'm sure there will be a work around for this. As far as I can tell, it detects whether or not the code for the ads is loaded or not. If a program could block the ad but send the signal to the site that the code DID load, the popup would be blocked and the site would be viewable. That's just how I see it and I could be wrong.

Workaround... or just let those "protected" sites die without visitors... your choice... ;)

BTW... "official" theft...??? Where...??? In the US...??? Uganda...??? Zimbawe...??? just bluffing...

This is ridiculous, I don't care what a popup says, I'm never gonna click one. If I want to buy something, I'll search it out not have it crammed in my face. That's like walking into Wal-Mart and having the greeter at the front door start filling up your buggy when he has no clue what you're there for.

Ad revenue doesn't come close to playing the bills of a site with good traffic. Let 'em sell it. That will just have to be sites that me and Phoenix never visit.

i managed to kill their little code snippet by using Proximitron, just changed one option to look for "http://www.anti-leech.com" and replace it with "..."

it works for their example, i need to find some other sites that have anti-leech on it to see if this really works...

yup. proxomitron is god. that and another "antileech" script i found doesn't detect my proxomitron config.

try it on www.vg-network.com download section.

funny when this was posted before nobody said anything, but when it made /. everybody is steaming mad.

Ok I am testing a method to stop this for now and I need help in testing it out, a basically

simple method which worked for one site that uses this, www.cdcovers.cc - they use

antiadbuster.com, and by simply using notepad to add a few lines to the "HOSTS" file on

"system32/drivers/etc" and adding the following:-

127.0.0.1 www.anti-leech.com

127.0.0.1 anti-leech.com

127.0.0.1 www.antiadbuster.com

127.0.0.1 antiadbuster.com

Probably will work for some and not others, but hey its a start :)

Test it out on other sites and see if it works or not.

anti-leech.com is too funny !

if somebody really wants to "steal" my HTML code or images bad enough they will manage too do it.

As for theft using an ad-blocker, get real, I figure 70% of all pop-ups are porn related.

and 10% of that X10 camera ads.

oh well I guess 90% of us internet users are now classified as thieves nowadays , since were using popup blockers, host files and then p2p filesharing for music.

nuff said !

i got through to that site ok and i'm using the popup blocker that came w/ NIS2003. i still dont see how blocking popup ads can be considered stealing. they are obtrusive and annoying. i realize sites have to generate revenuw through ads, but i've seen sites that incorporate ads tastefully and the way they did it just made me go, "wow thats sweet, imma check that out". not that inyourface approach that popup ads go by.

Sorry, but you have no god given right to money. The web/internet wasn't created to be a source of revenue for a crappy site. I enjoy sites' logic in employing this:

1) Block users from accessing their website.

2) ???

3) Profit!

Way to go guys...

Theft my ass, its like saying modding a game is against the law, when you bought the game and are running it on your own system. My browser, My settings, My computer......We could always say that having a ad on a site is stealing from us because ads use up space on our HD, because a site has ads, its stealing space, THATS STEALING!!

I in no way support this whole idea but hear me out please:

Looking at it in their eyes, going to sites and blocking out their source of income is sorta like getting a hot box for illegal cable. You are bypassing the means of payment. So, it is not bullpoop, I think it is just very intrusive on their part.

I for one have never clicked on a popup. Shoot usually I have them closed them (using Alt F4) before they have loaded. I don't see how they make money on popups. Does anyone actually click on that crap? I figure they must because they keep showing up.

What about all the censor-ware in schools/libraries? They're blocking all the porn companies from their revenue! And they're blocking all the controversial sites from potential visitors who would in turn see their advertising and help them make money!

Ah, but we're not "stealing their bandwidth" then. But what about the sites that aren't porn related yet advertise it and then having those sites blocked from people who now cannot click the banners?

There are so many complications to the real world it boggles the mind, so I (and the majority of people) say just screw this. Is it any wonder?

:p

Heh, just had to humor ya
