PsyOpWarlord
My XBox 360 had been sounding like a jet engine (the fans) for a very long time and recently it had sounded louder than ever esp after moving it from the living room to my bedroom. Well since its not in warranty anymore I decided to take it apart and see if cleaning the heatsinks and fans would make it run cooler thus reducing the fan speed. Got online and found the instructions and took her apart and cleaned everything. Wasn't really dusty inside. Got everything back togethter and thing got worse. Now the system was locking up with 10 mins with 2 red rings on the left side of the ring. OVERHEATING DAMMIT. Well I had broken the seal on the housing when I opened it so not even sure if MS would even look at it even if I paid the fee. So being the electronics technician I am I decided to redo the thermal paste on the heatsinks. Got everything apart and realised I only had some cheap thermal paste but decided to proceed. Got everything back togethter and wouldn't you know it. THREE RINGS OF DEATH. :x  Now I'm screwed and fuming cussing at myself. Start looking around the room at things I could sell to get another XBox 360 but decide to wait and let myself calm down. Next day I take her back apart To see what I could find. Wouldn't you know it I made one big rookie mistake. There are (2) X retension clips that hold the heatsinks to the motherboard. If you put them on upside down they will ground out the motherboard so be carefull and don't follwing my mistakes. Corrected the problem, put everything back together and turned it on thinking the board is toast and to my susprise the damn thing was working again. Well kinda. It was still overheating really fast but there was hope as she wasn't completely dead anymore. Went out toay and got some Artic Silver 5 thermal compund and took everything apart AGAIN. Cleaned the heatsink and processors to get the crappy stuff I put on 2 days before off and proceeded with the AS5 install. Put everything back together, crossed my fingers and pushed the power button and ITS ALIVE. WOOHOO the thing runs like a dream. Man is it quiet now. Its a lot more quite now than when I got it back from the Microsoft Repair Center back in January. Its at least 5 (or more) times more quiet than before I took it apart. :woot: So if your out of warranty and think your cooling is bad you can repair the problem yourself. Just don't make the same mistake I did with the heatsink clips
xcopmanx
Very nice story, excellent. Yeah, the system is quite loud. I really want to shut it up, but I'm not yet ready to void my warranty unless I have to... like in your case.
