lukeangel
Internal HDDVD won't happen on this generation of xbox (as you can't release games on it that alienate the current x360 users) Also many gamers don't care about HDDVD movie playback . . if they did, they would get the external What I do see happening for the next revision is: - Drop the Core Version - Put the current premium version in that price point - Release a New Ultimate version with Larger HDD, maybe intergrated wireless and put that in the old premium price point. oh, and they will now have HDMI outputs built in :) I doubt they will release a version with HDMI Outputs built in just as much as I doubt they will make a HD-DVD drive built in, again this would peeve off a lot of people having to "rebuy" the console to get high definition support via HDMI (which is also un-needed at this time). You can't sell 10 million units then change the console in the middle of the game, wont happen regardless if HDMI or HD-DVD is wanted. Whats more likely to happen is more TV makers accepting 1080p over Component or VGA. -Luke Angel
Fred Derf Veteran Posted December 8, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted December 8, 2006 However, if MS allows games via HD-DVD that'll pee off a lot of gamers, and the ones who got the 360 at launch. Why should they have to pay again to play enhanced versions of games. If I was MS I wouldn't make an internal HD-DVD drive in 2-3 yrs, I'd just make a new Xbox for users (Xbox 3?) but that would be too soon seeing how 360 came out a year ago and a bit. Yeah but by then (a year or so) the external HD-DVD device might only cost $59. They wouldn't be asking for a huge reinvestment from the original owners. Internal HDDVD won't happen on this generation of xbox (as you can't release games on it that alienate the current x360 users) Also many gamers don't care about HDDVD movie playback . . if they did, they would get the external Well here's an idea then. What if a developer released a game with two discs. One DVD disc for the actual gameplay and one HD-DVD for the transition scenes. Gamers without HD-DVD drives would be forced to skip the HD-DVD movie scenes (or do a lot of DVD disc swapping).
Kushan
Here's the thing about it. Microsoft can (and probably have in development) make an Xbox360 with an internal HD-DVD drive. Functionally it wont be any different than an Xbox 360 with the external drive. Space wise, it'll be a bit neater, but that's it. Thus, his is almost certain to happen in the future when the cost of HD-DVD and the 360 drops down enough to make it viable, but you wont hear Microsoft mention ANYTHING about it until then, as it could harm current Xbox 360 sales (why buy a brand new, expensive next gen console if it's going to be obsolete soon?). Now, about the games on HD-DVD thing. Despite all the hype about Blu-ray and HD-DVD's "massive" storage space, games do not need it. It's as simple as that, you can compress textures, audio and video remarkably well and the actual game's code itself isn't that big anyway (you're talking about 100Mb tops, for all the .exe's, dll's etc.). How many Xbox 360 games require multiple DVD's? To my knowledge, these are few and far between and apart from storage space, they would gain absolutely nothing from moving to HD-DVD. The reason those PS3 games take up so much space is because a lot of the data is not compressed. To give you an example, one of the arguably biggest and best games on the Xbox 360 so far has been oblivion and it takes up about 4.5Gb, that's around 1 single layered DVD. Gears of war comes in at around 6.5Gb, or 1 1/2 layers. Those are both damn fine games and neither of them are pushing the boundaries for required storage, so HD-DVD isn't needed at the moment anyway. Besides, there is absolutely no reason as to why a game can't be released on HD-DVD anyway. No reason at all. Just like with PC games, most games that are released on DVD are also released in multiple-CD format (I pity America, where most games still seem to come on CD's, in the UK at least DVD is the standard). There's no reason why the same can't be done on the 360, with a game getting separate releases to appeal to both userbases. But the simple fact is, it's not required. Brandon Live Veteran Posted December 8, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 8, 2006 What I do see happening for the next revision is: - Drop the Core Version - Put the current premium version in that price point - Release a New Ultimate version with Larger HDD, maybe intergrated wireless and put that in the old premium price point. Like I said - Core will never go away. And why would you want it to? If you want the current premium unit at $300, why wouldn't you want the Core at $200?
