I now have the Dreaded "Red Ring of Death"

Recommended Posts

Yea I was just reading that as well. Mine was manufactured in 8/4/2006 so I got it like 2 months or so after the manufacture date. All though the 6 looks like a 5 but I am almost 100% positive it's a 6 :)

i've heard some people have managed to get their consoles fixed even though they've opened them up (and even flashed the DVD drive in one case) just as long as the microsoft sticker looks relatively good. i think when microsoft send them back they sometimes screw up the sticker, so you could always say its been serviced before...

Just wondering which one is better???

or

Just wondering, I was considering getting the first one.

I got the intercooler and it was ok at first. You could tell it did make it louder, but now a few months later that thing has been removed. It got so loud I thought my 360 was scratching disc while it was spinning or something. Don't know about the other one though. Let us know how it goes if you get it.

Don't get one that sits between the 360 power supply and the console. Those that use their own power supply, or USB, are fine.

  • 1 month later...

Just had the red rings flash on me too :o

I was playing Rainbow Six single player for about 90 minutes when the console abruptly cut out (lost sound and video) and the lights appeared.

Turned the console off fast, left it for a couple of minutes. Turned it back on, booted up the game fine.

I've now disconnected all the cables from the console as recommended.

I'm really worried about this. I only got it a month ago, and although it's crashed on me, I have never had the rings.

Should I be concerned? The console manufacture date is 28-10-2006. The console lies horizontally, with nothing obstructing the heat exits and nothing on top or below it.

Is there anything I can test or do? HELP ME!!

Why not just buy a new one and return the old one at Wal-Mart or something? No one is going to know the difference. Just say it didn't work out of the box.

When the sku# on the receipt, box and console do not match, then what? Sure they won't know.

I've never owned a console myself, so this is all new territory for me and I'm just intrigued - is this kind of thing a common occurance? Not just with the XBox but with other consoles, do things like this regularly occur?

It's Wal-Mart. They are very well known for taking back everything and half the time they don't even bother checking the console itself. They scan the box and mark it on the receipt and will most likely give you a Wal-Mart gift card with the money on it.

There's also some Wal-Marts (might be all, I'm not sure) that won't give a refund on any electonic item. They'll only exchange it for that same item. All the ones around me do that with electronics, but they don't do it with DVD's for some reason.

No need for concern at all. I had the Flashing Red Rings about 4 months ago.

Why?

My power cable became loose, and the console detected that it had somehow.

All I had to do was re-plug the power cable in firmly, and I have not seen the Red Rings since.

So sometimes it is something as silly as a cord getting loose that causes the Red Rings, so no need to panic or worry at all.
