VGA HD AV Cable with CRT

Recommended Posts

When I get my Xbox 360 at Christmas I was just going to run it on my 14 inch SDTV DVD Combi, however I have recently found out that I could connect up a CRT computer motior to it via the VGA HD AV Cable, would this give much better picture quality over my TV/DVD Combi ?

My computer monitor is a Compaq S710, but if I could get another second hand on the cheap I may consider getting a better one.

I'm guessing I would also need to get another set of PC speakers and connect those up too, how would I do that, is it the same cable?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Richard.

Yay a gothling!

It's highest resolution is 1280 x 1024, I suppose this would be better... starts to smile, haha I don't need a HDTV !

Any idea how I would connect speakers?

Also what's the difference between VGA and SVGA, I think my monitor is SVGA, does this matter?

Thanks Kick, I'm beginning to get excited now!

Will the picture be sort of, in between SDTV and HDTV ?

NO! The VGA cables support up to 1080p which is the best quality HDTV picture you can get.

The only exception, is that in theory HDMI will produce a higher color contrast image then VGA will because HDMI is pure digital while VGA is still transferring the image in the analog realm across the wire. The analog signal will bleed between pixels which will give less contrast then HDMI.

That being said, you'd need a really awesome (think $5k+) HDTV to even begin to see the difference. I have a 19" LCD monitor that has DVI and VGA inputs. DVI is very similar to HDMI in that it is a high definition digital source. I can only see a difference when looking at black text on a white background. The DVI source looks a little crisper there then the VGA source. That being said, I can tell no difference when playing games or watching movies because the pixels kinda bleed together anyway.

Hope that helps!

Do yourself a favor and get those VGA cables!

something else: the fact that you are using a CRT is kind of a bonus from a non-widescreen LCD because you should have the option to adjust the height and width of the image. Non-widescreen through VGA has kind of been a pain on the 360 because many games have bad AR on this combo (like Gears of War). If you are on a CRT you can correct this annoying error (i.e., things that are suppose to look like perfect circles look like ovals instead). With a 4x3 LCD you typically do not have the option to adjust the height and width and thus cannot compensate the AR error.

Another thing... you say your CRT is 17"... well it probably only supports resolutions up to 1280x1024 (which is in the "720p" high definition realm). Don't sweat it too much, because 99.9% of all 360 games right now only support up to 720p. Almost all games only support widescreen, so get use to seeing the black bars around your image. That is pretty annoying, but here is a trick: select 1280x1024 as your resolution in the console OS but for the format select "widescreen." You won't have black bars anymore, but now you have horrible AR error...squish the image with your CRT adjustment controls and now you are at least taking advantage of all the pixels on your monitor.
