LOC Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 OK, my friend is buying me a 360 today (yay!) so I need to know a few things, because other than reporting on console news I know nothing about the console really. I know I need an Xbox Live Gold account, I can buy that probably at a Gamestop near me or whatever. And I'm going to get Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas and probably Saints Row as my starting games, since they all have awesome multiplayer supposedly. (Maybe CoD 3 instead of Saint's Row?) But I need to know a couple of things. First, what do I need to be able to use my home cable connection so I can actually be online on Live? I have a cable modem, and I assume I need a wireless router to hook up there, and then what...a wireless adapter for the 360 correct? How far will wireless run without issues? My TV is in another room and I'd say a good 50-75 feet away from the PC if not more. Anything else I need to know as a "new" 360 owner? Any advice would be great since I haven't had a console since the PS1 days, and while I'd love to get a Wii or PS3 right now, he's buying me a 360 :D
Sethos
First off I'd like to say ... Saints Row multiplayer awesome? No way. ( My Oppinion, it's pretty weak ) And you don't "need" Wireless, just get an old standard Network cable ( Comes with the premium ), if you have a switch. King Raa
I don't know about the 360 but I'd always reccommend a wired connection the internet for gaming on PC. You can use pretty much any router (just router, not if it specifys it has a modem inbuilt) as the ethernet currently running to your computer will run to your router, from there cables / wireless to anything else. LOC Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 Maybe I won't get Saints Row then, maybe Dead Rising instead? :| Or just CoD 3. And I may be an uber gaming god and tech guru, but I know nothing about networking stuff. So when you say switch I literally have no idea what you mean sadly. I thought of a KVM switch, lol. And I don't think it's really going to be workable for me to run a cable line from my PC to the 360 anyway, what with my Mother sick now and all. I think I'll have to go with a wireless router/adapter anyway.

I would say if you can pick up Saints Row or Dead Rising used.. go for it... otherwise pick up COD3 instead.... as far as wireless routers... stick with Linksys or D-Link... I also think there is a compatibility list over at the xbox.com site... and if you can spare the $99... pick up the xbox 360 wireless router... it hooks in nicely to your setup... if thats not something you care about you can get one for half the price by picking up the original xbox wireless adapter
Vykranth
Normally, the first time you connect your 360 to live, it will offer a free one-month trial of Gold from your silver account so you are not forced to buy a Gold membership right away. Core System or Premium System? If you are going Core, do not forget the HD. To create your live account, you will need a Live ID/MS Passport: there is a wizard which helps you with that with Configuring the network of 360s is normally a breeze, put the cable or the wireless adapter, for the Wireless, enter the keys and you should be good to go. 360s can auto-detect NATs, DNS and DHCP. On other things, there is a very nice ladder with the Neowin.net players created by PabUK Join us, Resistance is futile
Sethos
Haven't tried either CoD 3 nor Dead Rising, from what I've heard CoD3 is quite a buggy experience, feels like an unfinished game. Dead Rising on the other hand should be one of the top Single Player games for the 360. I don't know what kinda setup you are running, by switch i meant an ordinary Network Switch. ( Network Cable from Router/Modem to Switch, Network Cable from Switch to any Computer/Device you need ) Some modems may have a Switch function built-in. Because it's quite an expensive solution to get a Wireless setup if you are able to get a Wired. But if Wireless is the only option and your willing to waste the $$$ on it, go ahead :)
andrew_f
To keep things the simplest it can be:- 1) Get a wireless router. 2) Get a wireless network adapter for the Xbox 360. However, if you are interested in wired simply get a traditional router, most wireless also support wired, and plug the cable provided in 360 premium pack into the console. Either way are pretty simple and good investments, especially if you're planning on networking in future. Hope that helps. Hope your mother gets well also. Vykranth
If you want a game with a good multi-player experience, I would recommend Burnout Revenge: multi-player is fun and I am sure you can get it cheap used or from a bargain bin. Dead Rising does not have multi-player but it's a fun game anyway.
LOC Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 Yeah I'm going to get the Premium system as far as I know, at least that's what he told me he's getting me :) I might just drop Saint's Row then, I read some good single player reviews, but if you guys say to drop it for Dead Rising or CoD 3 I may just do that. Any other games you can suggest for MP or even SP would be appreciated, as I said except for reporting the odd console story (as I'm usually only posting PC news as most of you know) I don't really follow games on the 360 or other consoles. And since it is a simple matter of getting a wireless router, and wireless adapter I'm probably going to go that route. It'll be much easier I think than setting up a wired router and running a cable line, even if I did use a wireless adapter on the 360's end I guess. And thank you Interrobang. Sethos
Rainbow Six: Vegas and Gears of War for Multiplayer as you said, If you really enjoyed the Grand Theft Auto series get Saints Row, but as i said don't expect too much from the Multiplayer. What's your friends number and remember to add us all once you get connected :ninja: Also, Hope your mother gets well soon :)
Smigit
OK, my friend is buying me a 360 today (yay!) so I need to know a few things, because other than reporting on console news I know nothing about the console really. Glad to see youre finally getting one. grats edit: as for that third game. Why not wait until you have the console and download the demos for the respective games so you can get a feel as to what you like? I also recommend getting one of the 2 battery charger kits (probably the one that connects to the wall seeing as it takes 2 batteries not just the one and it doesnt rely on usb to do the charging). Either one comes with a rechargable battery too which will set you up for at least one control. Edited December 12, 2006 by Smigit
LOC Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 Eh, not really a big fan of GTA series at all. But Saint's Row looked pretty sweet, but I think I'll just get Dead Rising since I KNOW I'd have a blast with that one heh. And hey, I have no idea how to add anyone yet! And thanks :)

But all of these games have great single player and multiplayer(except Dead Rising)... so you are safe with all of these games.... for sports.. def pick up Madden 07... I personally love the new Tony Hawk Project 8 and also loved the Lego Star Wars II(original trilogy)... obviously some of these games can be found in the bargain bins for a nice price... DarkGashX
I am doing the same, going from PC to 360 actually. I plan to get the following which have been recommended to me: F.E.A.R. - I Love multiplayer on the PC with this game and want it for live. Gears of War (AKA GoW) Rainbow Six: Vegas (AKA RB6V or RBSV) Burnout Revenge
LOC Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 Well I have FEAR for the PC, no desire to play it on a console :D Same for Oblivion :D I'm more than likely (for today) just getting the console (in about an hour now!) and Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas (which I'll be getting for PC also to play with my PC buds - coop ftw!) and either Dead Rising or Call of Duty 3. I'm not sure how well I can play an FPS on a controller, especially after playing soley on a PC for all these years now. GoW and RB6 are different, but we'll see. *Edit* For those of you who do have FEAR on 360, are there alot of people playing it? Or is it empty? If there's a healthy online playerbase I suppose I could get it. Since I loved it on the PC :D
DarkGashX
Well COD3 has been given a bad rating as it seems to be COD2 with a little update on the graphics side. I don't like war games myself but thought I would point it out. As for F.E.A.R., I just want to be able to play online with my xbox mates (when I get some ;)). Not sure if I'll complete single player again.

LOC Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 I'm not so much concerned with the singleplayer portion of CoD 3, I'm in it for the multiplayer stuff and from what I read it was the most "complete" mp package yet for 360....but then again everyone says the same about Rainbow Six Vegas now so eh :p Oh and the first thing I do on Live Arcade is get Geometry Wars Retro Evolved! Ayepecks
First of all, I'd say I think you made the right choice. I'm a huge PC gamer, and I've been disappointed with consoles since after the SNES days with the exception of a few games (Goldeneye, Metroid Prime, etc), but I absolutely love the 360. Honestly, I think it's the best platform for a PC gamer to get. I don't know why that is, it just seems like the games are really similar to PC games in every way, and that the controller really adapts itself for PC gamers (I don't know why that is, since I hated the original Xbox and its controller). Gears of War is definitely the must-have title on the 360, so you're right about that. I tried the Rainbow Six: Vegas demo on the OXM DVD and wasn't to thrilled with it. It looked great and polished, but I didn't find it to be very fun. I'm sure I'll end up picking it up soon, though. Perfect Dark: Zero would be a good game to get right now since you can probably find it as cheap as $10 or $15 at some places, so I'd recommend getting that. Nowhere near as great as Gears of War, but still a good game. Only other game I own right now is F.E.A.R. and you said you already played that on PC, so there goes that... based on the demos I've played I'm getting Dead Rising and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter next, if that helps you any. LOC Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 OOhh, right, GRAW. I think I might pick that up for 360 then, even tho I have it for PC the PC port is the watered down PS2/Xbox version. Not the uber good 360 version that has lots of pepole still playing online! (unlike the PC version heh)
AMDMEFX-55
Make sure you ulitize optical audio stereo sucks. O yea Dead Rising is a nice game. Also if you have an LCD display get the VGA hookup for it cause it looks sweet.
Roger H. Veteran Posted December 12, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 12, 2006 Welcome to the Xbox 360 world man... or better yet, the Live! world! I was nerver really a big gamer but i play my GOW almost everday now and all weekend. Yesterday i had the most fun playing online... we were just being stupid (in GOW) and just ran up on them with chainsaws and shotguns and ripped em. LOL We lost sometimes but we eventually won the whole game (19 rounds) We were just talking mad junk and laughing. The other team was doing it too so it was lots and lots of fun. Just run up to the same spot each time and blast blast blast till someone wins.

And I don't have any other audio system setup either, I'll just have to live with no HD and no super hifi audio :(
