AimLXJ
I got my Xbox 360 somewhat last month and found out that it only had 10GB free, while the HD itself is 20GB why is that? I know there are some videos ( around 1-2GB ), one arcade game ( 55MB ) and other extra stuff ( 50MB ) and I should have like somewhere near 17GB free but I only see 10GB, so what do you think is going on? sfalcon
The most you can get it down to is about ~13GB free. There's some music and HD videos that come with the 360 that you can delete to free up space.

neoadorable
the brotherly love spewing off these pages just in time for the holidays... yes, i think it's mostly the OS. as noted, you can free up 13-14 gig after deleting the music and vids that come pre-installed. Arbiter
Yeah, I've never seen more than 13 either, but it's not like I ever get close to filling the hard drive up. Now if I could just solve my ps3 issues.
Huleboeren
You never get what it says - like if you buy a 250gb harddrive, its only 233gb or so.. And it cant be the OS now can it? How would the core users use the OS then?
Sheppard
Read what it says, it RESERVES the space for caching and other things, it doesnt NEED it.
PiracyX
You never get what it says - like if you buy a 250gb harddrive, its only 233gb or so.. That is true. Id say its around 18.5GB formatted so 5.5GB+ is being used for system files.

AimLXJ
Ah, supposly the 360 uses some hard drive space for virtual memory or what its called just like on the computer.... interesting...

It's not virtual memory. It's caching, BC emulation, etc. The 360 has plenty of memory bandwidth. (Thanks to Epic :p )
neoadorable
good point, it can't be the OS after all! well, even better, we can use that 7GB to get titles up to HD-DVD sizes then...
DarkGashX
The highest amount someone has gotten to free up on the 20GB drive is 17GB. :).
+dnast Subscriber² Posted December 14, 2006 Subscriber² Share Posted December 14, 2006 There's also a music database on the HDD with the artists and song titles for people that aren't connected to the 'net (it might be in that article - I didn't read it yet). Depending on how many albums are in the database, it could be pretty huge.

Why not use ID3 tags for any file formats that support it and just let anyone using CD's or untagged media rely on the fact they know the song.I do find it a bit crummy that so little of the HD is actually useable. It really does force the need for a larger HD if you ask me. I do live and my medias stored on my PC thats networked but still I would like 20GB or 18.6 or whatever but 13 is a bit low. I might end up buying one of those adapters that sits between the HDD and 360 and connects to a PC. A 60-80GB hard drive replacement would be more convenient, but I can't help but think that MS will rape our wallets going by how overpriced most of the accessories are.
