naxtek
As Pentium 4 reaches the 3 GHz mark, what is currently happening in the Processor market? Apart from the current Athlon XP 2800+ manufacturing problems AMD are having, one important issue struck me. For as long as I can remember, Dell has only ever sold Intel processors, but in the short future this looks although it may be changing with the release of the new x86-64 processors from AMD. Dell has had reputation for producing high quality (yet debatably high priced) computers, and more specifically network and Internet servers. The current range leaders use Pentium 4 and Xeon processors from Intel, but we could be witnessing the dawn of a new era. As most of you will know, all of today?s popular processors (including Intel Pentium 4, Intel Celeron, AMD Duron and AMD Athlon) are a maximum of 32-bit. Many large corporations will soon demand the new x86-64 technology, and therefore if Dell does not switch to using AMD processors they could loose out dramatically. If Dell do take the large step, it will only be time before other Intel-only manufacturers give in to the supreme power of the world?s best processor manufacturer (highly opinionated ? sorry to anyone who disagrees). Sadly, currently, Windows does not support 64 bit technology, but this does not matter for the new Opteron or Athlon 64 as they are backwards compatable with 32- bit technology. The only operating system currently available with 64-bit support is Linux, which many server owners prefer anyway. The one field where AMD do not excel is the mobile processor market. They have yet to develop a processor with as lower power consumption as the Intel Mobile Pentium 4 series. I personally have always supported AMD, and will only ever buy socket A. Only time will tell who will win in this never-ending battle. I personally would like to see a new opponent to the PC System (such as Acorn with Risc OS) rather than just another opponent in the same PC market. naxtek*com
