'Gears of War' A Success for Xbox 360

Recommended Posts

Epic Games' Gears of War is the fastest selling next-generation game of the year, and the fastest selling exclusive for the Xbox platform ever, Microsoft said Friday. In addition, the game was the best selling title during the month of November, according to NPG Group. The first-person shooting game beat out Sony's highly-anticipated PlayStation 2 title Final Fantasy XII, released October 31, and the Wii's Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the top spot in November. No game for the PlayStation 3 was in the top ten. According to NPD, the game sold one million copies during the month, raking in sales of $61.5 million. Sources within Microsoft told BetaNews previously that there is some anecdotal evidence of the title actually helping to boost console sales.

Some 80 publications worldwide have already tapped GoW as "Game of the Year." At the Spike TV Video Game Awards, the title won four awards, , for Best Multiplayer Game, Best Shooter, Studio of the Year (for Epic Games) and Best Graphics. It lost out to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion for Game of the Year bragging rights, however. Microsoft says that in the first six weeks of release, nearly two million copies have been sold, including one million in the US alone, and it has become the number one played game on Xbox Live. It has also been credited with a 50 percent surge in paid registrations to the online service, the company said. "We've always held high hopes for 'Gears of War,' but we never expected such an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and gamers all over the world," said Michael Capps, president, Epic Games. "I can't describe how stoked our team is right now. Our fans can absolutely count on Epic to keep delivering new gameplay through Xbox Live."

I hardly see people buying a game for a console they dont have.

But anyways good news for the 360. The longer Sony has delays the more entrenched these games can become in the market meaning theyll get a large fanbase and people wanting to try it out since many othe rpeopel gave it good reviews. :)

In other news: water is wet and the sky, apparently, is blue! ;) j/k but I thought it was kind of obvious. (Oh, and I'm talking about the original source, not you Slimy. Thanks for the post.)

I think the game is great! Best gameplay for an action shooter ever, in my humble opinion.

The first-person shooting game beat out...

Too bad the source doesn't know that it is a 3rd person shooter.

well its the best game i've played in a very long time so it deserves to be the best game of 2006 end off.

i've played it and i had tremedous fun with it, admittedly it felt a little short but it made up for it with a interesting storyline, intelligent AI, and a mode so insane taht it makes the game last so much longer :p

it was one of the games that influenced my decision to buy a 360...that and halo 3 so i guess GoW could be used more since it was an up and coming release!

havent got my wi-fi adpater yet (santa is bringing me it) but when i do it will be the first game i try online!

i didnt expect much from it, but it truly is a fantastic game and surpassed my expectations! so this news hardly suprises me

Get ready for Gears 2 and beyond...

I think that is the most important thing to take away from Epic's initial release. Epic/Microsoft now have a franchise to build off of. GoW has set a standard by which itself and followers must adhere to.
