Texture Flicker or Dying 360?

Recommended Posts

few days ago textures in RSV, COD3 and GOW started flickering on me, especially ones in the background or "peripheral" vision. also, the draw horizon seems to have become nearer, with objects popping into existence/flickering.

this wasn't the case previously. in fact, it hardly looks like it's on 360 mode anymore. maybe 240.

kidding aside, this is really annoying and i do not want to send her in days before the freakin time off i'll have for the holidays.

additionally, been getting more and more errors on boot up, the most common ones being 65 and 74. these go away with a hard reset.

what do you think? is anyone else experiencing flickering/corruption?

thanks much

thanks for the replies.

PC Madness, those two i believe related to the hard drive, but they could mean a mulittude of other things.

what are other people getting? slow to update textures in GOW seem to be commonplace. any flickering anyone?

this also happens in PC games, but not as much.

i'd like to hear what more people have experienced.

I get the slow rendering textures in GOW as well. They seem to have gotten worse as time has gone on, but perhaps it is my imagination and they have always been that way. I cleared my cache as well and it did nothing.

Not exactly what you mean by flickering though. Sometimes I get little white type dots in the backgound on certain games, but I have never really seen any images going "on and off" which is what I imagine flickering to be?

Honestly though bro, I have had my 360 very close to a year now, and I have never, ever, ever seen one boot message error. I hate to say it since I know you will be out for a week or two, but send that sucker back immediately.

I get some slow rendering on Gears but I think thats just the game engine.

That is just a Unreal 3 engine bug and perhaps that's why it does it in Rainbow Six: Vegas as well. :D

BTW anyone that has NFS: Carbon does the game freeze sometime? This is the only game that I have that does this.

thx for the excellent posts and finally we're getting people to come out and talk about this.

mipmapping's been around for like thirty years or something and still they can't get textures to look solid! that's annoying. therefore excusing it as an engine bug isn't good enough.

Larry, there's no way i'm spending the holidays 360-less, no way. a neoadorable separated from his gaming cannot stand! Only way that's gonna happen is if the b**ch catches on fire or something. consider yourself lucky btw Larry, my first experience with her was a code 67 (had to change the HDD).

now, texture flicker is what you described for GoW: slow updating/shimmering textures, and i agree it's gotten worse lately but then i was playing a few hours ago and it was fine!

texture flicker is also what Hule described in RSV, which is another title prone to the phenomenon. it's mostly the smaller textures, like decals, doors, furniture, seams, stuff on walls etc. GRAW also had this to some extent.

sorry, no experience with Carbon.

i doubt it's got anything to do with heat and Hule, your 360 probably didn't freeze due to heat either, that cooler would be a waste of money. my machine proves this: it's got some problems but is cool to the touch even after three hours of use.

i want to know if these gfx issues are something stemming from the GPU or recent updates or what. my system wassmooth for the first month before these problems began.

keep the intel coming!

On your Xbox 360? If so how? :pinch:

Clearing The Cache The "Basic" Way Directions...

Clearing The Cache The "Proper" Way Directions.

I have done both before, but the second way I labeled "proper" is the one I did most recently.

Just a note, if you do do it the second "proper" way, it will also get rid of any software updates you have downloaded. Not a big deal, as it will just ask to update when you put whatever the game is like it always did before.

@ neoadorable - I knew you would not want to hear my suggestion about returning it, and I totally hear you about wanting it through the holidays and I feel your pain, but I sincerely and truly feel that any error codes are just unacceptable, and by accepting them you are avoiding the inevitable of it completely dying.

If you have an extended warranty, than by all means wait until it completely dies. If you do not have the extended warranty, then I suggest right after the holidays that you make that call.

Again, I understand why you would be hesitant, but I really have to say I do not consider myself lucky as you said. Nor do I do think you are unlucky because you are getting them. I just think I have a working console, and you have a faulty one, and yours needs to be taken care of sooner than later. Infrequent error codes are just not supposed to be commonplace, never-mind frequent ones.

In regards to the flickering textures, those are the two games that I see them in, they are both the same game engine, so I would say that is normal and a result of the engine itself, not the console.

larry, thanks for the reassurance and kind words. yes, you're correct of course when you say it's unacceptable, and will do in the new year: she'll be on her merry way to a check up, for sure. just got a bigger screen and all that...it would be too much not making use of these facilities and the wonderul games over the holidays.

sad that so many machines are experiencing these problems. however, i reiterate: my machine is working, just throws codes and sometimes requires reboots to get going...

i can even live with some texture corruption...although it doesn't have to be the engine, Larry. remember your observation that it's been getting worse. i share in that. it may be the updates or active online connection...who knows, wish there would be more on this from MS sources.

magik: this is my second HDD. haven't tried disconnecting it coz the machine does work, essentially.

like the festive headgear by the way...
