Halo 3 ViDoc Goes Live Dec 20th

Recommended Posts

Hello, dont care. First impressions was made, and I'm not impressed.

There is a 50/50 chance this could represent final gameplay physics, or as you stated could be replaced.

So may I suggest you watch it before you comment on it so you might see exactly what I am talking about.

Anywho, here is the image of HUD, im certain is bound to change, actually I hope it does!

And it would appear that the Arbiter may return.... hopefully he suffers a violent death early in the game.

Exactly, we're all very aware how early this is, no need to keep going round in these circles. The game will be fun, it's a certain, but this video does little to make me eager to get my hands on it. There's double standards everywhere surrounding videogames, if this was anything but Halo it would have people shrugging unimpressed.

I'm not talking about graphics though, that's everybody else's presupposition, my criticism is that I see nothing in that video that interesting gameplay wise, but as I said before I really only play the Halo games for the multiplayer.

Well to be fair, they weren't trying to show off much gameplay either. Their intent was to show off the "new" enemy we will love to hate in the next game and what their mindset about them was/is. I think you have to give them credit for doing a good job of that.

Of course yeah, Bungie seem like a great group of dev's. I like the self-criticism on the last games they did which actually does give me some hope they'll make the single player more fun by not falling in to old traps.

Nothing about the video excites me.

Oh well, maybe the next video will.

I guess you really have to be in the series to be excited about it, though. Everything they said seems like typical stuff you'd want from a videogame, I suppose, but stuff that's what I've come to expect from good games. The A.I. didn't impress me at all, even though they were hoping the A.I. routines would bring people more in the game. To me, it didn't seem like much of an improvement at all.

So, Gears of War didn't have impressive AI? This is similar pack-style AI that they're giving the Brutes, except this is even more advanced.

Wow, you guys really, really are missing the point of these documentaries. They seriously should've just made it an audio interview so you all would have less to complain about. After all, then there's no pre-alpha footage in the background.

Elliott: I think many of them just don't like documentaries. Or hearing about Brutes. Bungie mainly did this for the fans, not to generate excitement.

Et Tu Brute Update

After the release yesterday, of the seven minute documentary feature, we got a lot of questions (as expected) a lot of praise (always welcome) and a lot of criticism (on the internet! Who'd have thunk it?). Anyway, it was all expected so today we're going to address as much of the rumor mongering and misconceptions as we can, without simultaneously ruining it for everyone. To spice it up visually, I have made some "in ur" memes to distract you from the lack of new screenshots.

1. Hay guys! What the hell is up with these graphics?

The graphics you see in the Vidoc are a mixture of things. For one thing, they're months old. We started creating that doc quite a while back. You'll see some near final models, some rough character rigs, placeholder lighting and a lot of "sandbox" locations. These are basically spaces that the designers, animators and artists place their models to play around with them.

That's one reason why there are so many scenes of big empty rooms with crates in them. There certainly are some scenes from the game in there, but alas, none properly lit, textured or populated (yet). That's why we call it a work in progress. If you're looking for the final look of Halo 3 campaign, it's not in there, except in the briefest of hints.

2. Four grenades in the HUD! Is that fourth one the Shield Grenade from the TV ad?

No. And like anything you see in the Vidoc, it's based on early dev work, often months-old. I can tell you that the HUD shown in the Vidoc isn't like the one in the current build. There may be more or less items in that "grenade" bar now. It may be gone entirely. I'm not saying this to simply distract you from the question, but rather truthfully point out that things can, do and will change. Don't get too attached to, or too upset by anything you see here. It's likely that almost every single element shown will look entirely different by the time the game ships.

3. Brutes! Does this mean I will only be fighting Brutes in the next game?

Not at all. The Covenant society has changed since Halo 2 – a civil war between the Elites and the Prophets has caused a deep schism. But Covenant politics are deep and dark and you will fight a wide assortment of villainy. As you saw in the doc, there's a scene where Grunts are fighting alongside Brutes. Plainly then, the idea that the Covenant has split in cleanly definable ways, is out the window. It's a religious society and one where passions and faith far outweigh any other consideration. The reason there are so many Brutes in the doc, is that it's a doc about Brutes…

4. We saw some new weapons! What gives!?

Naturally there will be new weapons in the game. You certainly saw the Brute Spike Rifle being used, and hammers. As for the other snippets in there, you'll have to wait and see. Put it this way, not everything will be recognizable in the final game.

5. How do I see this if I don't have an Xbox 360?

If you haven't found it already, you're not trying hard enough. Try Gametrailers.com and all those sites. We'll have a 640x480 version on Bnet tomorrow.

6. What about Brute behaviors? Is what we see what we get?

No. We show very little gameplay interaction with Brutes in this piece. When you fight them, their behaviors change dramatically and strategically. And of course, there's more than one kind of Brute.

First of all, no, Gears of War didn't exactly have impressive A.I. for modern games. Good, but it didn't impress me in any way.

Secondly, how is what was discussed in the movie similar in any way to the GOW A.I. other than the fact that they're both A.I.?

If it's for the fans is not supposed to inform and generate excitement among them?

I'm not a blind fan where I'll just drop 60 USD for a game that doesn't excite me. So far the first two trailers have greatly interested me in finishing the story that started over seven years ago. This latest one, though filmed months ago, does little to peak my interest. It informs, I'll give it that; makes me feel eh... and not wow.

The thing that disappointed me the most about this video is the fact that the grunts are still part of the covenant... I somehow got the impression that they left along with the elites and the hunters...

I dont like killing those guys :(

It's because it's not a trailer. I think most hardcore Halo fans (when I say hardcore, I don't mean you play the game for 10 hours every day, I mean you've looked into and followed Halo/Bungie outside of just the 2 videogames) appreciate these kinds of documentaries. I certainly love to see what goes on inside Bungie studios. That's what this was meant to do. This wasn't meant to be a trailer that generates tons of hype for the game. It's just meant to give a look inside Bungie.

BTW, I'm not trying to force you to like the vidoc or anything, but you guys seem to have expected more than what Bungie said it was going to be.

That's the thing though--it's not a trailer. It wasn't meant to wow or excite anyone--just inform, boring or not.

I thought it was pretty interesting to say the least. :s We got new info about different Brute classes, new weapons, new Brute armor, new animations, new AI, etc.

I guess it's not for everyone.
