Back in August, when Microsoft and Epic announced the release date and price for Gears of War, we ran an editorial to discuss the pricing structure for the standard and Limited Collector's Edition of the game. Gears of War marked the first game published by Microsoft Game Studios that sold for $59.99 and $69.00 respectively.

Forbes took the time to dissect the development and production costs of the game to find out an answer to the $60 price tag question:

Curious who is reaping the rewards from each $60 game sold? Based on interviews with industry players and experts, we've broken down the dollars and cents of the console gaming industry to see who's getting the most action.

This would be the reason Sony keeps losing exclusives...

Can't turn a good profit if there aren't even consoles to play the games on.

I think Sony is losing exclusives because the market for gaming is increasing rapidly - thus making a game exclusive will cost ALOT more.

They should do like MS does, and just buy all the studios with the games they want exclusive..

Considering how far in the red they are after borrowing money just to finish the PS3, purchasing other companies must not be too high on their priorities list.

^ Yeah, but you guys have always paid more. I honestly feel for you.

I missed out on most of last gen, but weren't most games $50 and less in the US? I know it's only a $10 difference, but the $60 price tag has stopped me from buying a lot of games. Of course, I had been PC gaming during the time so I guess the fact that I was used to paying even less than $50 for most games puts me off even more.

I hope MSG stays at $50 for the rest of their titles (I can understand Halo 3).

I've noticed prices in PC games drop slightly since last year. Most Xbox 360 games, especially new ones, usually come out with a $69.99CDN price tag. I think that's a bit too pricey. Do you guys remember when games were $79.99?
