jimmybob479
Well, I was playing GoW Split-screen with a friend last night, maybe for 2 hours, and then all of a sudden the system just locked up, like froze completely. No sound, no weird colors on the screen, no ring of red lights on the system, nothing was responding at all. I use one of those Nyko fans and had it on. The disk was a little warm when it came out I would say, but I don't think the drive itself was hot (I had an old 360 I sent back because the front of the drive would heat up). This morning we started the game back up and it went past that same part where it froze fine..no problems. If my 360 had really overheated wouldn't one of those ring of red lights have come up, or weird colors be flashing on the screen or something? Was it just a glitch with the game/360 that happened? I'm hoping it was a glitch...

NoLiMiT06
I have had that problem with NFS: Carbon and I am using the Pelican Fan Stand which btw is way better than the Nyko one. The console it self is noticeably cooler to the touch etc. This has only happened with this game and it has done it with and with out the fan stand on. Could just be the game but I have not had a problem with Gears and I played it last night on co-op with a buddy split-screen with no problems. :) Like I said it could just be a faulty disc somehow or just a little glitch in the system. I still have till Jan. 12th to take me 360 back to wal-mart to get another one if the problem gets worse :)
Liquid
Ditch that fan, It just makes noise and nothing else. The 360 does not overheat, if it does, its a faulty unit.

mattmatik
I bought a Nyko fan the day I got my 360 in June, before I even got any games. I was so paranoid about the overheating issue. Around September it started making noises (the fans would 'stick') and I actually had 2 freezes due to the unit...if I unplugged the Nyko the 360 would boot right up. Since then, I've left it off and haven't had an issue, not to mention it's a bit quieter. I haven't had GoW freeze on me though. The only game I've really had issues with is NCAA Football 07, but it's a rental and EA has had alot of problems with this type of stuff on next-gen sports titles (it actually gives dirty disc errors alot). StevoJD
Let's hope it's a glitch, but it could be a hangover from the Nyko fan. Lucky for you the Xbox 360 warranty has been extended. :)

lunamonkey
Happened to me a couple of times. Started out with a freeze or two. Then after a few days went to corruption. Then within 2 days, all of this...... Then went to crashing a black screen after a few minutes of play. Then would last about 5 seconds of play. Then wouldn't even load the game. Then wouldn't load a movie DVD. Then wouldn't load the dash. Had to send it off in a coffin. ... https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...amp;p=588161458
jimmybob479
Hmm, i'll unplug my Nyko fan then. .. I had it off right now and was playing Halo 2 when it randomly froze. Same thing, just a still screen, nothing responding, no ring of red lights or anything, just dead frozen. Anyway, I got my 360 last february, does that mean my warranty is going up until this next Feb in '07? BTW, i bought the nyko fan because it "extends" the life of the 360 by reducing heat. Do i need to worry about the heat, or will my 360 still last ~4years w/o the extra fans?
jimmybob479
hmm, right now, after taking off the Nyko fan, Halo 2 made a high pitch noise and little white squares (kinda like fuzz on a bad tv station) were on the screen...i had to manually turn off the system. ynnoj
My console froze exactly like yours did once when I was playing R6: Vegas online. The system was totally unresponsive, no rings, nothing. That was on Friday, first time it's happened, nothing since. Date of my 360: Oct
jimmybob479
what do you mean "went to corruption"? A corrupt screen like I said with the squares and the blinking and whatnot?
jimmybob479
well I left my 360 running right now (w/o the nyko fan attatched) playing perfect dark zero , letting about 16 bots play in an unlimited / untimed match, and came back about 20 min later and it was just dead froze..as usual. No lights though. So I'll be calling the microsoft number tomorrow.......

DarkGashX
I don't want to be saying this too early, but from 12pm till now which is 5am (Yes I know I love my new 360) my 360 has been on and all the air coming from it is cold but the back is a little warm and warm air out the back which is normal, even pcs do that. Although, disks can come out hot :o.

jimmybob479
well, tonight i finished my homework and thought i might hit the good ol' 360. I was 5 min into GoW at the "congradulations" screen and it ..just..froze. So I thought oh well just play some halo 2. Popped that disk in and it froze while connecting to live. No response. No menu, nothing. This is my third xbox 360. That replacement one I was talking about in my last post I already received. I ditched the nyko fan and picked up a pelican fan stand. After it froze twice I left PDZ running with bots for about an hour and nothing froze. Disk a little hot though. Then played GoW for about half an hour, nothing froze, and disk was just normally warm. Now i'm completely confused if these freezes are just normal after I haven't used the xbox 360 in a month, if this room / my setup has my xbox too hot, or if i have another faulty system. In the past, my second xbox 360, froze while it was in the living room anyway. Heres a pic of my setup: I'm ABOUT to move it in about a week. I ordered a westinghouse 1080P thats going to go in my room, so i'm going to move my 360 to there too. Right now its in my office, next to my tower pc (about a foot away). This room doesnt really get AC (no idea why), and i'd assume this room is always 75-80+ degrees, atleast today, its 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. note: the pic is a bit old, so it doesnt have the pelican fan stand on it. BTW, i've read the microsoft website for "when the screen freezes". Edited February 21, 2007 by jimmybob479

Olemus
You may have voided your warranty by using that nyko fan, MS made a statement saying that they wont take them back if there are signs of the nyko being used (it melts the power connector on the 360) and causes significant brown marks on there, so fingers crossed none of these show on your box, DAMN nyko ;)

That was with my second xbox 360 which gave me the exact same problem - random screen freezes. This latest (3rd one) just has a pelican. btw, my case is a raidmax scorpio or something like that.
