Shadrack
I was just thinking... Microsoft has done a great job with XBOX Live, Media Center Extensions, and the XBOX Live Marketplace (although, I don't agree w/ their prices and DRM strategy for the videos). One thing still lacks, greatly... a Web Browser. Is there any plans for one? Doesn't the Wii and PS3 have an integrated web browser?

Although with the PS3, and Wii both having web browsers (The Wii browser was released today) there might be some pressure for Microsoft to release one. Whether or not they do I have no idea. There's no big reason to release a web browser, but I do see why some people would find it useful, especially if their console is in a different area of their house then their PC, but that isn't the case for me. I have a Wii though and I'm surprised how well their Opera based browser works, even flash seems to work flawlessly (even youtube videos). I wouldn't be surprised in the future when they "unlock" XNA for non-creator's club members to download someone comes up with an XNA based browser (although whether or not that's possible I'd have no clue, if XNA 360 can't access network functions then it wouldn't be). Shadrack
Well, I'm not so sure how much I would use a full fledged web browser. I think I would get more use out of an RSS feed reader for news and local movie times and what have you. The issue could also be with the fact that the 360's harddrive isn't on the core systems. You would think that the creators of Internet Explorer, which is still the most used web browser in the world, would have a web browser on their console especially if the competition does. FreqFace
It seems pretty simple to do, so they might aswell...

Neo003
Microsoft has pushed 360 as a media center and not as a pc, if you add that kind of stuff and what you will have is another pc in your home. I am not opposing the browser I would love a browser in 360. But I am hoping XBL team focus more on the current features than adding another one in, putting a browser in a console and there is no end in patch. Shadrack: Internet Explorer and XBOX Live is handled by different team, it?s not simple to add browser in a console that adding browser to your pc. NegaC: Again it?s not as simple, and you?re forgetting that after implementing the browser you have to maintain it just like they do for pc. Keep an eye on PS3 & Wii (I have no idea how Nintendo will maintain their console I have no experience with Nintendo) Browser for their patches. Now and in future there will be some A** H*le will try to crack in the system.
Tiger.Girl
I hope Microsoft sticks to the focus of gaming and media it makes much more sense than worrying about a web browser. I think Microsoft understands if you have a 360 and a internet connection you probably have a PC also. The amount of effort it would take to make one could be better spent on something other than a weak novelty. Same with the Wii. Why bother? You are stuck surfing the web in 480p resolution. devBrian
As long as there's Viva Pinata, why do you need a web browser?

Of course Nintendo assumes you have a PC as well. It's just something where you can browse sites away from your computer. I don't see the problem with browsing a news site on my TV in my bedroom rather than going downstairs to the PC. Easier access. Opera is putting in most of the work with the Wii browser, so it's not really drawing too many resources away from Nintendo. So that isn't much of an issue. I really don't see what the problem is. Not everyone has multiple computers, and this sure does make it easier to browse somewhere else. Although I did think MS would have done something like this though, but the 360 is great the way it is. I use it for most of my media needs. Brandon Live Veteran Posted December 22, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 22, 2006 Only thing I wonder about is if they did do one, whether they'd start with IE or with PIE / WinCE version (since it's more platform-portable), or neither. And what sort of development and deployment approach they'd take. I wouldn't say it's especially likely... however, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of "answer" to those sort of Wii / PS3 capabilities. Brandon Live Veteran Posted December 23, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 23, 2006 and how do you add the feeds to the 360 without a browser? Choose them on a PC using your Windows Live ID - could all be managed using the Windows Live RSS platform. At least that's how I'd do it :) Letting you select some basic feeds on the 360 itself from a directory or top picks would be nice.
