Call of Duty 3 MP Problems

Recommended Posts

So like other people all of a sudden today when I go to join a Player (or Ranked) game of CoD 3 MP I get one of two errors nearly every time:

Could not connect to all players (this is 99% of the time)

Session is no longer valid (or whatever it says)

Now, I didn't change any settings in my router, and I had no problems at all playing until this morning. I've searched and found several forum threads from IGN, Gamespy etc even here on Neowin with people with the same issues, but they are over a month old or more some of them. And there has been at least the one patch I know of, which supposedly "fixed" this issue.

Is anyone else getting this same problem now, and if so how did you fix it, or did you fix it at all?

If it helps I'm using a WRT54G Linksys Wireless router. I've forwarded all ports needed by Xbox Live, and even placed the router in DMZ to see if that would help, but nada.

Yeah I forwarded the proper ports, but I have no way (that I see) to add my 360's IP to the DMZ itself. Unless I'm such a newb and don't know how and its right under my nose :|

Stupid router thingies.

Yes that's the DMZ zone, but the .100 addy is my routers address, not the 360's no? I haven't checked the 360 yet, but I'm pretty sure the IP is different than that.

The .100 is the IP for my 360. Your routers ip will be .1

Edit: Actually, it might be .100, I might have set my router to be .1

To find out your 360's IP, assuming its being done by DHCP, then goto Status -> Local Network -> DHCP Clients Table Button in your 54G. You might have to guess to figure out which one is your 360.

If you did a static IP, I think you can view it in network settings on the 360?

My 360 is .101 which is in my DMZ.

go to the network blade on your xbox and MANUALLY assign a DHCP and IP address

Networking is the one thing on PC's I'm not that good at since I've never dealt with it previously. I wouldn't even know where to get a DHCP server address or IP to do it manually. For the 360 I mean, I know what the DHCP is for my PC of course, but I can't use that for the 360 can I? :|

I r newb.

^ You make up the IP address for the 360 as long as it fulfills the following requirements:

1) It's within the IP range of your routers broadcasted DHCP IP range

2) No other device has the IP

But you shouldn't have to do any of this unless you're actually having connections issues and/or you're not getting "NAT : Open" on the network test runs on the 360 system tab.

Although you have already done it, this is the tutorial I found that made it easiest to assign my 360 a static IP and forward all of the correct ports. I am just like you, not that keen on all of the networking stuff.

Fourth post down I believe, whatever is the post made by the guy named Silent Sniper.

Now with that said, for the record I did all of the whole port forwarding stuff and assigning a static IP. I have the same router as you, and it did not make a damn bit of difference at all.

The way I know it did not make a difference is I conducted the Network tests with both a Staic IP and with settings set to Auto. I got Nat:Open using both of them. In fact I also got Nat:Moderate a few times, and that was with both a Static IP and with the Auto setting enabled.

I basically came to the conclusion, at least in my particular situation, that sometimes my ISP sucks, sometimes they do not. I think they basically just have to much traffic sometimes. When I went through all of this, it was a Friday night and I started doing my tests at around 7 PM. By midnight wether it was with a Static Ip or it was set to Auto, I got NAT: Open consitently. Between 7-12 sometimes it was Open, sometimes it was Moderate. The next day it was Open all day, and again that was sometimes using a Static IP, sometimes just leaving it set to Auto.

So as magik said, at least with the router you are using, it really should not matter at all and you should be fine having it Auto detect the settings.

I just think it is a Network issue you are experiencing, and it should sort itself out. I have found with Live that although sometimes it appears the issue is on your end, after hours upon hours of exhaustive troubleshooting, including setting up a Static IP, hours on the phone with my ISP, and going directly from my cable modem to my 360, I have found out the long way it is nothing on my end.

Basically it very could just be the provided servers for playing are/were having issues issue.

I would not dismiss the fact it is nothing to do with all with anything on your end. In fact, since I have gone through it all myself, my guess is it has nothing to do with anything on your end at all. It is either your ISP acting up, which mine does all of the time especially at "peak" hours, and or the servers being provided by the company in order to play COD3.

Give it a day or two and see if it does not sort itself out.

Well I must thank Brandon especially for sitting and helping me sort things out, at least I hope so.

I still have 1 star connections to every server, but I've been able to connect to pretty much any server now, so yay. Stupid CoD3. At least I know console games are buggy also ha!

And thanks magik and Larry of course for that novel of a suggestion :D and everyone else who offered help. If you ever need PC help or gaming help on the PC, shout out word! (As long as it isn't networking related, ugh)

Yeah I really don't know what they, very few other games have these kind of issues.

Its because COD3 is the first of its kind to do peer-to-peer for xbox live. All (or well most) previous games used the XBL servers in order to connect - peer-to-server-to-peer. If your NAT is open, your ping should actually go down, resucing lag, server usage, and allows for more information to be sent to and from.

Also from my understanding, if the "host" leaves the game while it is still running, everyone else can still play instead of having to end the game.

You can't have a peer to peer first person shooter. There has to be a server to decide who killed who first. Aside from which.. its just the CoD2 engine.. and I don't think it was anything fancy like that?

Yeah, it's still just the Quake 3 engine. Though they made the grass and shubbery look incredibly good I'll give em that. And they added a new physics engine of course. :)

Lo and behold I go to play just now, can't connect to all players on nearly every server again. Yay. Well I guess I'll have to wait for them to patch the damn thing again to see if they can fix it. Otherwise I'll see if it clears up or not. Back to Rainbow Six or Gears of War I guess.

I tried most of this stuff, but I think I'm just going to send it back and get Rainbow 6. I bought a console so I didn't have to go through so much trouble to get games to work correctly.

I'm sure there will be a fix just like with COD2, so I'll consider giving it another try when they get the game working right.

You should wait a bit before bringing it back, because when you CAN get online, the MP is freaking awesome. Especially maps with tanks hehehe.

But, Rainbow 6 Vegas is godly, so I'd say buy it and keep CoD3 anyways! RB6V is an absolute blast online, I just with there was joint MP between 360/PS3 and the PC versions.
