Brodel
Xbox 360 owners may have noticed that their systems make as much noise as rush hour traffic. Between the power brick that doubles as a heater and the fans inside the casing that cool the innards, Microsoft's console might as well be called the Cacophony-box 360.But all that is about to change. Beginning in 2007, the 360 will get a new processor, one that is smaller and cooler. The Singapore-based company that manufactures the current 90 nanometer chip has a new design for a 65nm CPU. The benefit of the new chip, by running cooler, is that the Xbox 360 console itself will draw less power from electrical outlets and be far quieter during operation. Here's to lowering utility bills. http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=7375

The Dark Knight
i had read about this somewhere else, but what they plan to do is to mix it up with the current stock. they are not going to tell u which box has which one, sly dogs!
Brodel
Oooo i knew this would happen, im glad i waited :) i will purchase when they confirm that shops now have the 65nm CPUs Yea, same here I think. The heat issues as well as reading quite a few posts about fan noise and quite a few people I know having to return their systems put me off buying one but hopefully a lot of those issues will be solved with the new edition. neufuse Veteran Posted December 25, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 25, 2006 well its the same chip, just in a different factor... the title is misleading, it should say XBOX360 CPU to reduce size
Corris Veteran Posted December 25, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 25, 2006 So ehm, do we get ours replaced then? :s No point replacing them, the only difference is that its goign to be quieter and will use less power. Can you imagine if companys actually repalced all teh older models with newer ones that had slight changes, All the original GBA's and DS's that nintendo would have to swap for the newer sp's and lights, and the old PS2's Sony would have to aswell for the slims, I dont think so, lol. But hey, tis good news, quieter and less power is only a good thing. :D
AJerman
Well as far as that goes, didn't we already know that they would be coming out with a new chip even when they were first designing the 360? I seem to remember them saying that they would start the system out with the 90nm chip then move smaller when they had the technology ready. Either way, I need to get a 360, but I really don't want to wait... ugh! My problem is that when Forza 2 comes out, I have to go to the store that morning and buy it and a 360 if I don't already have to. There will be no stopping me. And that will be quite a few months before the new CPUs are due.

Smigit
This is at least 6 months old (infact it was mentioned last week). Anyway my advice is not to hold out. Not only can you not guarantee when the stock will trickle through so that you get one but there is absolutly no performance increase. The power will go down so perhaps they could issue a smaller power brick but for the sake of their production line I doubt they would untill all Xbox's are on the new cpu. Ok so the cooler cpu will likely be more stable. Sure, but if you have issues you can get the 360 replaced anyway when the issues occur (baring in mind the US now has 12 month warranty like most of us) so in the very slight chance you are having issues you can address it then. To me that beats waiting for god knows how long to guarantee you have the newer revision. Ohh and being cheaper to produce wont mean they are cheaper to buy. DrCheese
meh just buy one and get an extended warranty. If it fails then you can just get a replacement and eventually the replacement machines will be the new 65mm ones. You can wait forever for the next big thing and never actually buy anything. If you wait, thats 6(At least, maybe more) without having a 360.
Shadrack
I think it is actually the optical drive making all the noise in my 360 but I could be wrong. It could just be a fan coming on in anticipation for a 360 game starting. Anyway, the noise isn't very noticeable if I am playing a DVD or doing Music/Video streaming. And when I am playing a game I pump up the volume to drown out the noise. I don't have any problems with a console hardware update as long as it doesn't lock me out of new 360 games. If that were the case then I would be ****ed off.
DarkGashX
Has been said many times before, it isnt guaranteed to fix anything and batches will be mixed up - says MS. Edited December 25, 2006 by DarkGashX
Shadrack
Has been said many times before, it isnt guaranteed it fix anything and batches will be mixed up - says MS. Right...so depending on what the current stock looks like you could be looking at next summer before you are guaranteed a new chip. Actually, I guess you could get it at best buy and keep taking the console back until you got one that was quieter. I wonder if it actually will be quieter, or just run cooler. kl33per
Well I just got one for Christmas and have been playing Gears Of War most of the day. It' doesn't seem to be that loud or get that hot. Certainly not as loud as many of the PC's that I've owned/used over the years.
