New Xbox 360 - Interior Rattle?

Recommended Posts

Hey guy,

I am so glad I stumbled on this forum. There is so much info to take in. I am new to the Xbox 360 as I just got one last week. I am already on my second one, because the hard drive failed on me with the first one. Second one works fine, love everything about it, but the noise. The damn fan is always on full blast, but I guess it necessary for it not to overheat.

Anyways, on to my question. When opened this one up and picked it up to move it, I noticed as slight rattle if I shook the unit. It's not like something completely broke off and is just sliding around in there, but it sounds as if something is a little loose. Like if a tray was not in the full close position, you can move it side to side. Is this normal? Should I be worried? Return it for another one?

Thanks guys. :D

If you rotate it, it's normal to hear a little tiny ball-bearing that moves around just a little bit inside. It's what tells the console whether it's oriented vertically or horizontally (since it adjusts the Ring Of Light depending on its orientation). Nothing to worry about.

I would. I got a 360 a couple of weeks ago and I have no moving parts. The fan is loud, yes. Make sure there is PLENTY of ventilation around it. I have the 360 laying in the open with nothing around it. This will probably void your warranty but you could open it up and tinker with it yourself, but your best bet would be to just take the sucker back and get a new one.

Yep that is what it is, only odd thing about it is the MS Support staff don't seem to know about that...when I first rang up the support line I described it to them and they told my console was defective and must be sent in, after some of my own research I discovered it was as Brandon Live describes and now it doesn't bother me :p

Thanks guys. How come Knight's xbox has no "moving parts"? Maybe he hasn't heard it yet?

You'd have to be in a quiet room to even hear it, and you'd have to rotate it on the right axis. It shouldn't ever sound like something is just bouncing around in there.

Really? The ring of light doesn't change at all on mine, either horizontal or vertical?

EDIT: Upon further inspection, yes it does! Wow, that's clever, I didn't even notice.
