Sources: 65nm Xbox 360 CPUs Delayed Until Mid-2007

Industry sources have revealed to DigiTimes that plans to manufacture the Xbox 360 three-core CPU using a 65-nanometer manufacturing technology have been pushed back until the middle of 2007.

Back in April, Microsoft signed an agreement with Chartered, one of the world's top dedicated semiconductor foundries, for the manufacturing of a 65-nanometer version of the Xbox 360 CPU using Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) semiconductor technology. Production was expected to begin in the first quarter of 2007.

Exactly. I was thinking of waiting but when they said 1st Quater 07 in the original articles that could well have meant March 30th and even then I figured delays were highly likely. Aust is slow to get these sort of updates too.

I do think people should just buy now, theres no real benefit to getting the newer revision.

Poo, I was waiting on buying a 360 until they released the 65nm CPU's but now it looks like I will just have to wait for the non existent price cut. But HDMI would be nice to have.

I'm a n00b when it comes to consoles--what's the concern for an end user to have a 65nm CPU over what's already available?

As an aside, my neighbour's kids got a 360 for xmas. They tried a couple of (original) Xbox games they already had, and apparently got some messages they were not compatible but to look for a download that adds compatibility (that much I was already aware of).

They already have broadband and all, but my question is--do they need a Xbox Live account to get these updates that MS puts out every couple of months? If not, how does one go about getting those on a 360?

For both

Seems stupid if they don't mention anything on HDMI soon, considering they kinda already said it can be done a year ago.

_dandy_ - A 65nm CPU uses less power and runs cooler so the fans don't have to spin as fast, reducing noise somewhat. Also they are less likely to overheat.

But the big difference is that they're a lot cheaper, which COULD mean a potential price cut, but it could also just mean microsoft loses less money on every console, i.e they don't pass the savings onto the customer.
