Will a memory card suffice?

The memory unit is only 64 MB. You can fill it pretty fast with a single game from XBLA.

The map packs are also rather large. The ones that comes to my mind are the Perfect Dark Zero and one pack to download is above 100 Mb.

While the HDD isn't necessary it is recommended. But it also really depends on the games, some games don't use much space for save games, others do. Additional content can vary, some games only need a few kilobytes others more (PGR3 for example needs around 30Mb for (each) of the car packs).

EDIT: Some additional examples for you here:

Gears of War - needs 1Mb for each save game, additional content..well there isn't any right now so no idea.

ES:IV Oblivion - needs 8Mb for each save game, additional content varies; most are only a few Kb, however, the expansion is around 200Mb (I think)

etc

Mojo so your in Aus?

Well you can get the Core for $379 at JB atm. If you add the $170 for a HD seperatly that comes to $549. Thats still actually cheaper than buying the premium console (most stores have them for $595 atm) unless you want the remote, HD cable and wireless control. So if your happy besides the storage space that will save you just under $50.

The memory card will suffice if you download absolutly nothing and just make save games and when saving dont tmake too many per a game. I think it's worth the money but. Arent the memory cards about $50 anyway? I'd say it's worth the extra $120 or so for the HD.

Without a doubt. There is so much stuff on xbox live that you won't be able to access with the core unit. Also games that require updating will take up space as well...

I don't even know why MS came out with the core.

Yeah, the hard drive really should have just been integrated. Without it, you're missing out on so much.

Also remember that you can't play (compatible) original Xbox games without the HDD.

Still, it's probably not worth it though, especially since you can get a Premium 360 and a free game for AU$599 at GamesWizards, which brings it down to around the same price.

Thanks for the help guys. The Core could have been worth it if they included an SD slot, since you can get a 2GB SD card for cheaper than the official 64MB memory card.

Well, the core was alright for me actually, cos I can plug my mp3 player into my 360 for music, I don't reeeeally want to play original xbox games (and if I did I can buy an xbox for less than a HDD) and we can't get broadband where I live so we can't get live.

I just got a core for xmas and then traded in New Super Mario Bros for DS as a straight swap for a memory unit at my local games shop. I also got GoW for ?35, Moto GP 06 for ?18 and Oblivion for ?30. I'm pretty chuffe:D :D

...Only thing is, first time today I was playing Gears and it told me the disc was unreadable and to wipe it, upon removing it it was spotless..:no:no:

I guess a HDD is pretty much needed for downloadable content then. Too bad it's such a rip off (AU$170). :pinch:

Does the HDD speed up loading times too?

Yes, the HDD is used for caching game data to speed up load times.
