christracy
So i got one for x-mas and the free space on it just shows 10GB. I thought it was a 20 GB drive? Where is the other 10? Is this strange or normal for the premium version?
FreqFace
You don't get the full 20GB, you should get around 13GB. For some reason, the rest is reserved for system use.
christracy
ty.. I was a bit concerned.
MrAlday
I heard it's mostly emulator software for backwards compatibility with original Xbox games.
Kushan
It's mostly a lot of software for a lot of things. The blades, the multi-meida functionality, plus no doubt a fair bit of reserved space for updates and such.

Remember the core users?
Kushan
Actually that's a very good point, my bad >_>
DrCheese
yea I was just thinking this, According to the xbox.com forums its used for system files.. but if thats the case then what to hell do core users have :o
DarkGashX
There is an "on board" memory chip, not sure why if you have a harddrive, why it doesn't use it though?
pmh
I believe that it actually has the xbox 1 partitions there (for backwards compatability), etc. The person that said it held the OS (for the 360) is just flat out wrong.

brandnewfantx
So what would happen if we opened up the xbox 360 HD enclosure and put a bigger Hard Drive ?
I am Reid
So what would happen if we opened up the xbox 360 HD enclosure and put a bigger Hard Drive ? Sure you can do that, but instead of having a 20gb hdd you will have a 60gb hdd that dosnt work.
AbandonedTrolley
It also holds an Audio Database for CD's :) When you enter a legit CD it should bring up the Artist and Title etc
Brandon Live Veteran Posted December 28, 2006 Veteran Share Posted December 28, 2006 Actually the space is used up by the following: 1) A couple of partitions used for Xbox emulation, that mimic part the layout of part of the original Xbox's 8GB hard drive. 2) Some preloaded videos and music. 3) As with all hard drives, the formatted capacity is a bit less than the raw disk space, so a bit is lost there as well. I also think some space is reserved for caching of game data to increase load times.
TogaForComfort
I also think some space is reserved for caching of game data to increase load times. I assume this is true, as I have seen oblivion running like a dog. But after defrag of the HD it runs fine again. Also, there are some Promo videos on there, I had 2 videos but there was a French and and English version of each. I watched them once and quickly realized I would never watch them again, so I deleted them. Got roughly 2Gb back just from that
Pilsbury
It also holds an Audio Database for CD's :) When you enter a legit CD it should bring up the Artist and Title etc I would have thought it used an online connection for this.
