Random CD Read Errors - New Xbox 360

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Having another minor problem with my new 360. I have two brand new games, Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas. Each time I have played them, I have gotten at least 1 Cd Read Error stating that the Cd is unreadable and it needs to be cleaned. These both happened when the Cd was directly inserted from the new box directly to the 360. So the data side of each Cd should have no scratches or fingerprints. It has happened twice with Gears of War and once with Rainbow Six so far. Each time, a restart of the system usually fixes the problem. Is this problem common? Should I be worried? Thanks again guys. :)

I haven't experienced that error with my 360 which I bought in August of 2006. However, I have experienced a different problem with burned DVDs. I get the "Attempting to read disc..." notification. Perhaps there is some dust on the lens of the DVD drive.

I've gotten this error when the game DVD was scratched (which is what you would expect). Also, my original Dead Rising disc which looked pristine gave me the exact same error at the exact same spots. Exchanged it with a new disc and it works just fine.

I would try blowing the inside of the drive w/ a can of air and see if that helps. There is probably some dust on the optics of the drive. If that doesn't get you anywhere, either exchange the unit w/ a new one at the retail outlet you purchased the xbox from, or call MS and have them fix it.

**UPDATE**

I kept getting errors playing RB6:Vegas, so I replaced the damn CD twice thinking that was the cause. Both times, I still ended up with CD Read Error's somewhere along the game, it ranged from 5 min into the game to 2hrs into the game. So, now I am going to be returning my Xbox for a new one this weekend, but I have a new concern. How the hell do I save all my achievements/unlocks in the game that are stored on the hard drive? Do you think they will let me swap the harddrives? Thanks guys.

try playing with the system horizontal instead of verticle see if that helps, sometimes i get errors when its verticle, i take disk out and put it horizontally and it works then... its wierd they seriously need to sort that out and make the drive read scratched disks aswell.

your achievements are attached to your gametag not your 360 (or HD for that matter) so when you get a new machine just recover your tag and all your acheivements should be there. For the stuff you purchased you can download it again just as long as you're logged in with your account

just had a thought tho, can you only download again on the same xbox tho? They probably did that to combat piracy? But if that's the case, can't you copy an arcade game to a memory card and then take it to your friends house to play? Isn't that the reason why they were limited to 50MB before (cards are 64MB)

Hmm...so all my RB6 achievements and GOW achievments aren't saved on the HDD? I haven't even played GOW online yet. Does it record all the levels I have beat and all the COG tags I have collected on the single player on live as well?

Btw, my Xbox has been horizontal this whole time. And the discs aren't scratched. I get the same errors with 2 brand new RB6 discs.

You can re-download on whatever 360 you want. You'll just have to be signed in to Live to actually use the content.

Your achievements are stored on the HDD as well as on Live. Just make sure you connect to Live before you get rid of your HDD and all your achievements should be intact. Keep in mind that unless you copy your games saves, everything else will not be saved (including progress towards an achievement).
