Gears of War problems-disk read errors

Recommended Posts

Got about 4/5 the way through the game but now in the same spot in act 4 (chapter 2), my game suddenly says the disk is unreadable, no matter what I do. About a couple of days before this whole thing, my xbox 360 made this terrible sound (like it was shredding a game or something), but it didn't affect anything. Not sure if that is directly related or what.

Just wondering if this is my 360 or what, because I just got one for christmas but already had to return the first one.

Well there is like this circular scratch close to the outside of the disc, haven't tried online play to see if that still works. Luckily, I can still return my copy to bestbuy tomorrow. So have you heard can the xbox be doing this? I have heard different stories about this circular scratch appearing on other games other than GoW, so I just need to know if I need to return my 360 (again) or not.

My GoW disk has a nice circular scratch on it as well. I do not know what caused it, but the game seems to work fine still. I'm sure there is something affected that I havent' done yet.

i have a very similar scratch and yes, i do think that the machine did this to disk... however its done it to none of my other games, which is a bit odd

maybe its something to do with all the thrashing that the GoW disk does (it is extremely noisy!)

its hard to say for sure, and i thought about returning it.. but it was too late :/

Usually thats caused by the pick up. Happens when you move your 360 from horizontal to vertical (or vice versa) position while a game disk is still in the xbox :s

Just to correct you a bit.. The "Scratching" occurs when you move it in that way when the console is on and spinning the disc (meaning you're not just in the dashboard and fooling around). Although it's always better to make sure the console is completely off when moving positions.

I would also suggest to anyone who has a 360 in a vertical position, and that area is prone to being "bumped" into by kids or adults, then you really should put it horizontal, gives it a bit more leverage and stability incase of any bumps.

Wow, didn't think it was a big deal when I picked my console up and slightly turned it (45 degree turn about) and plugged in the network cable, and thats when I heard the sound. Sadly gears of war was in the drive then. So your saying that's what did it? Does the 360 have the potential to do this with all games?

It does get noisy, and none of my other disk have done it either. I wonder if it is something weird with the game, or just a fluke.

In any case, I hope i dont hvae to buy the game again.

Should have read the owners manual first bud :/

Well, I didn't figure that it would harm the disc when I was only at the dashboard, I didn't think it would be accessing the disc but apparently somehow it must have been?

Are you sure the disc is actually stuffed? I get disc errors all the time, and my discs are fine. Theres something wrong with the player. Anyone else noticed an increase in ugly grinding sounds of late?

They released an update after the 360's release that helped with the disc errors.. but it seems to have gotten worse again.

Discs can get scratched if you leave them unattended for too long (i.e. you leave the main menu open without moving the cursor). This has happened to me multiple times, and it is universal to all consoles.

Don't know if that's the problem, but just a note.

Same issue here I am a little upset for a few reasons the first is I waited 1 year for all of the xbox 360 issues to be resolved and it would appear that there are still plenty of issues. I just got the 360 for xmas like I am sure many others have, only to find that the 360 is still scratching CD's and over heating. Or that Microsoft burned 1 Million BAD COPIES of its systems number one seller (much like the bad Quake4 PC burns that suddenly droped the games price to $19.99).

Ok so I have a bad $400 dollar console or a bad burn of Gears of War hmm ok well Microsoft has extended the Warranty for one year...... o but wait is there a brand new 360 on the horizon with all of these problems fixed. No doubt the Gears of War CD issue will be resolved by then.

Great Job, some one should start owning up for these problems. This is simply unacceptable

I 2nd that, I got mine XMAS day and it has frozen a few times and I also waited a year, if a new one come sout I will hit the roof because I bet "us previous" owners will get left in the dark.

One good thing about having one now is RBSV, GOW and Viva Pinata.

Wow that was a quick reply I guess im not the only one LoL let me know if you have a similliar issue,

If I look at the Game under a light I am noticing a slight cirgular scractch towards the center of the disc. I have never moved the console when playing (because I am very careful with electronics) but it is hard to tell if its just the nature of the games or its just such a light scractch that the game still plays ie you get the disc read error some time because of the scratch is so faint.

All I know is Xbox 360 is $400 Dollars with all the fixens we shouldnt have to deal with this and I will be writting them a letter ( post if there is any online action being taken )

Our 360 used to churn up disc's without even moving its position..

The 360 DVD-Drives have got to be the cheapest DVD Drives Microsoft could get there hands on, seriously.

Ha? So you left a menu open and the game got scratched as a result. I honestly can't say I believe this. Not saying you did anything wrong personally but there must be something wrong with your console if disks are being scratched while a game is idling. I dont see why it would matter if your in a menu or just playing the game normally.

Anyway yeah dont move the consoles with the disc in them not even at the dashboard. The dashboard will access the disk a tad especially when its just inserted. Even if the disk isnt spinning your still moving the console about with a disk thats gona be moving as a result so it just isnt a good idea at all. In any case I agree, the 360's drive is without doubt one of the shittest drives around. I dont think I've ever heard a louder drive and what dumbfounds me is that almost 18 months after the release of the console they havent replaced the drive with one thats quiter.

i did the same when i got my 360 with PGR3 , god knows why but i had it vertical while trying it out and thought hmmm that could topple so i turned it to horizontal a quick brrrmmmm sound and the disk was unreadable :x

the air was blue with myself cursing my own bloody stupidity....what the F was i thinking. the sticker on the front warns you NOT to do what i did, but like a child i whipped off the sticker without reading it LOL

(i wouldnt mind but i should know better im a IT support engineer)

Luckily i blagged the pgr3 back to play.com saying it was delivered damaged (within 24hours of delivery of console)

Ill NEVER move it again :p

I suspect it happens due to the way the pickup arm is balanced and/or spring loaded to absorb poorly made disks and unbalanced media. Even when in the dashboard the disk is spinning at idle speeds therefore the damage can happen to ANY disk thats in the console with power applied to console.

I have to admit i waited till the teething problems were ironed out and overall im extremely happy with stability and the lack of overheating (and its in a room alongside 3 pcs and a tv/dvd unit all wedged into a unit. I just ensured i kept the psu brick and console off carpet and away from each other.(anyone else think the "brick" reminds you of Commodore 64 power packs or am i just an old tosser?
