Rare Founders Leave Company

You guys do realize that MGS is more involved in the games it publishes than they let see. At the end of the day your owner is your boss and he makes all business decisions. I mean look at Bungie, do you really think they wanted their game ported to Vista ? A comic and then a serial comic ? an RTS game ? Hell Microsoft even went as far as to try and get a "mobile portal" bases on Halo.

Lastly let me ask you a question, do you think Rare even wanted to develop Viva Pinata ?

Bungie did want to do the graphic novel. See the foreword of the novel and it should give a commentary about the whole project.

And I'm quite sure that it was the Stamper brothers original idea to make the game, not Microsoft's.

I believe Bungie wanted to make the comic, mistake on my part I remember reading about it on one of their updates. But can I see a link of where it says the Rare brothers wanted to do it ?

I would like to point out that a lot of the games pumped out by MGS are of quality better than a whole slew of other developers. This is probably due mainly to the fact that MGS is just a higher level name for a bunch of great developers that MS bought, but I think even though MS does interfere, they don't generally mess things up. I would like to point out also that Bungie has stated many times that they have control of the development of their IP, but it's the deployment that's up to MGS. (This is actually restated in the latest news update concerning H3 Beta details.)

This article is about the Viva Pi?ata Xbox 360 game. For information on the Saturday morning cartoon based on this game, see Viva Pi?ata (TV series).

Viva Pi?ata is a simulation game developed by Rare Ltd., for the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console. The project was headed by Gregg Mayles and the team behind the Banjo-Kazooie series, based on an idea from Tim Stamper. Although rumors of the title circulated among fans for some time, Viva Pi?ata was officially announced on March 15, 2006, and first released in November, 2006. With a "general audiences" or "everyone" rating, the game provides bright, colorful visuals, intended to appeal to children and adults alike.

The original concept for the game began as Your Garden in 2002, and eventually evolved into the colorful world of Viva Pi?ata. Microsoft and Rare realized the growing popularity of the project and immediately began searching for licensing partners; they eventually teamed up with 4Kids Entertainment. As a result, in addition to being a video game on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, it is also a computer-animated television series produced by 4Kids Entertainment. The show began airing on 4Kids TV on August 26, 2006, and on Canada's YTV on September 9, 2006. Animation for the television series is done at Bardel Entertainment in Vancouver, Canada.

Look at the Wikipedia page for Viva Pinata... The game concept was Rare's idea, but it was transmogrified into Viva Pinata when MS and some other corporate goons got $ signs in front of their WOW-WE-CAN-DO-A-TV-TIE-IN-AND-MAKE-MILLIONS eyes. It was just rebranded 'kiddie' as part of the marketing process.

The game design (as others have mentioned) is quite innappropriate for kids < 10, which may explain its' poor sales, although I think there is more to it. It's not as brain dead as POKEMON, and is a sort -of adult title masquarding as a kiddie title. I think it's prolly more approriate for someone 10+ years than someone < 10 years.

I've got the game and I must say I do not quite see the fuss. The graphics are outstanding, but it has too many annoying flaws to make it a classic IMO.
