360 movie downloads outperforming Amazon rival - report

Matt Martin 15:28 03/01/2007

HD movies via console more popular than e-tailer's Unbox service

The Xbox 360 is driving the concept of digital movie downloads far better than consumer competitor Amazon, as audience's favour ease of use over the amount of content on offer from the world's biggest online retailer.

Microsoft's high definition download service has been more successful than Amazon.com's Unbox effort, with US consumers preferring to watch content directly accessed from the console's hard drive rather than struggle with burning content to discs, according to a report on Variety.com

It's even suggested that box office flops are performing well as downloads over Xbox Live, appealing to consumers eager to access high definition content.

According to the report, studios such as Warner are seeing consumers download high definition versions of films over standard formats where both are on offer, with the average US $1 more for HD content no barrier to purchase.

"If you look at our sales charts, movies like The Perfect Storm, Unforgiven and Swordfish are all doing disproportionately better than you would expect, and the only explanation is that they're available in HD," said Ross Honey, senior director for media at Microsoft's content and partner strategy group.

And this is exactly why Microsoft needs to admit they were wrong and release larger HDD's for the 360. It seems to be the most obvious thing in the world, yet everyone within the walls of that company appears to be oblivious to reality.

i haven't downloaded any movies yet as i'd like to own the media itself but i've been tempted so many times since i don't have an HD-DVD add-on drive. Watching my fave movies again in HD would be like OMG DROOL MODE ON!!! I would get some but the fact they expire kept me away, i'd hate to spend all that time downloading a movie (close to 2hrs or something) only to have it expire 2 days after and i gotta pay to watch it again. i'm sure the cash cows over Hollywood would love that but not my wallet... houston, we have a problem there.

As for the HDs, even 200GB isn't enough it feels like sometimes, with demos racking in at 1GB+ and movies being 5GB or so i could download 5 movies an and a couple demos and that's almost 40GB there. Sure the files expire and delete themselves after 2 weeks but what about my own movies that i'd possibly like to put there... now that would use it up fast!

I can only dream of such thing, the two dominating ISP in my country are retarded with bandwidth: 10gb per month, houray for 2 HD movie per month ... :(. My 13gb xbox harddrive is fine, it never will get full anyway.

Chrizzle, the article I posted yesterday (the one you commented on) had 2 guys from MS corporate say "it's not a matter of if, it's when." They arent being oblivious. Maybe something at CES will pop up? :)

They didn't say that. This is the quote:

"It's a matter of when now, and not if?" Greenberg replies.
Which was a reply to the question posed:
"So when is the bigger hard drive coming out?" I ask.

They were simply pointing out that the reporter chose the word "when" as though the drive was going to exist.

What does all that wind down to? The fact that they're oblivious.

Possibly they didn't want to spoil the fun and wait for an event to release a bigger hard drive.

Really... a bigger hard drive really is nothing special, why do they need an 'event' for it? Why don't they just release it and be done with it.

Never said they would make an event for the Hard Drive, but an event talking about new features and such.. Just like they do a E3, but E3 doesn't exist anymore, so? :p

a bigger hard drive would be cool but what are they gonna give us? 60? 70? 80? still with that we cant download as much as we want. They should add the support of external hard drives. Those are alot cheaper and alot more bigger for the price.

they use a proprietary format system for the 360, and I highly doubt they will ever just give it to us. It would probably allow hackers to do some interesting things, all of which are bad for Microsoft in the end.

great, you people are forgetting that this solution will cost money, lots of money. i just got the 360 two months ago, plus with games etc..

as for the Hd movie downloads, yeah maybe they're great but my system's been dowloading V for Vendetta for THE LAST FREAKIN WEEK and it's still only at 38 percent. of course i only play every other day for an hour or two but still.

That's why it'd be optional. I would never need the extra space, but I'm sure others using the video service would love it.
