This is an informal request not pre-approved by upper management so don't get too excited.

If we were to offer a 2nd (or even 3rd) tier, what would you guys like to see?

I'd like you all to suggest a list of features so that I could create a multiple choice poll. I'd like to see what comes out as #1, #2 and #3.

Some of the things you suggest may not be feasible but it would be nice to have a wish list.

Right now the package is best known for the email address yet most of you don't really seem to care about that. Don't get me wrong, we're working on fixing it but perhaps it shouldn't be the highlight of our marketing.

Some example poll choices might be (half of these are probably not possible, I'm just brainstorming here):

  • Blogs
  • POP3 email
  • @neowinmail.net (or whatever) email hosted on LIVE or Google
  • Even more PM space (you get what 200 now?, I get even more and I probably need to delete some right now)
  • Elimination of ads
  • Faster speed

It's probably not a great list but I wanted to get your ideas before I make a poll with my poor choices.

Don't be afraid to throw in crazy ideas like adding or removing content from the front page. It may not happen or be possible but I'd like to know anyway.

To be honest,

I don't care about extra features etc. I just wanna support Neowin (Y)

Blogs: Who'd wanna read anything coming from me? But a really good idea :)

POP3 email: Got my ISP Email

@neowinmail.net (or whatever) email hosted on LIVE or Google: Got plenty of Email accounts

Even more PM space: I get 5 PMs a year :p

Elimination of ads: I don't even notice the ads

Faster speed: Couldn't say no to that - But Neowin seems fast enough for me :)

My only request is better communications and support from Neowin staff.

The support is a glaring weakness at this point in time. Honestly, (and I'm not singling anyone out) you guys have to setup an email account when someone subscribes and give them a badge and that seems too cumbersome for the people who do it.

I'd cite specific posts that illustrate my point but I'm sure people have seen them already and shouldn't be too surprised at my comments.

Yes people - I don't need to hear how everyone on Neowin has a life and this, that and the other. If you were to add more packages that had anything to do with Neowin staffers being more involved, how we is it going to play out seeing as it's already a chore getting 2 things done?

I appreciate you guys thinking about adding more services, but a company who adds more but doesn't support things to the satisfaction of their users is absolutely worthless. Don't take it as a negative post - just throwing it out there.

I think the email ideas was a great idea in the past but now we know the problems that it has caused then its best emails are left out unless you can host them elsewhere and I think it wont be a suprised if I say blogs...it would be nice to let the subscribers have some sort of blog system to show the other users what you are up to at the moment. Another one would be more PM's.

My 2 cents :)

I just subscribed, so i'm new in here :)

But I was just thinking how cheap it was to subscribe here. It wasnt even ?7 for me?:

Firstly I suggest upping the price to around ?15 (a little off topi;);) ) and the features I would most like to see are blogs and removal of ads. I have no need for a neowin e-mail service tbh:):)

To be honest, any subscriber who wasnt in it for the badge ;) wouldnt want to remove ads, ads support Neowin way more than your subscription does :p

I, for one, would really like a blog here on neowin, i dont suppose it would be too hard to implement (just allow access to that area to the @ subscriber group), but just like the rest, i have so many email accounts i didnt bother asking for the neowin one ;)

if i want an email, i have *@bma-uk.co.uk, however having a neowinian blog would be cool (maybe you could change the current email subscribers who dont use it over to blogs if it was ever implemented?)

Blogs (Y)

POP3 email (Y)(Y)

@neowinmail.net (or whatever) email hosted on LIVE or Google Would need access by POP3, but (Y)

Even more PM space For sure (Y)

Elimination of ads Definitely would like this (Y)(Y)

Faster speed Not sure how you'd do this, but (Y)

My only request is better communications and support from Neowin staff.
What would be great is if they created a staff member which did nothing but handle subscriber issues. (Y) I realize that won't happen, but if you decide you do... I'm on here all the time and I'm volunteering (Y). Even just having a way to have subscription-related PMs/emails get "special treatment" in the Admin's inboxes so that PMs about subscriptions get dealt with and not lost with the other things.
Firstly I suggest upping the price to around ?15 (a little off topic;)) )
Agreed(Y))

What I would like to see is subscribers get sneak peaks at pre-release things (e.g. if they had opened up IPB 2.2 to Subscribers a few days before everyone else).Probably> extremely difficult or outright impossible, but would be cool. Might not work for IPB updates, but possibly new skins? Or special subscriber-only skins?

Ooh..... And, remove (or reduce) the flood control for subscribers:yes::.

Finally, although this does not affect me... I bet you could get alot> of those members who whine about their warning levels to subscribe if you guys offered an immediate 20% warn reduction (or something like that). Defeats the purpose of warning to an extent (but not that much since the AWR is still in place, and the reduction is 1-time-only), but would probably get some extra subscribers.

At the current subscription price, yes, but we are not talking about the 10 or so a year that it is currently.

My way of thinking was... if we are going to fix this, let's fix it right.

Sure, we can transfer the emails from our rented server to our own servers and maintain the status quo but it is also a good time to think about how it SHOULD be done.

I dont think that would be fair really... maybe if subscribers warning levels dropped by 20% every 2 months rather than the current 6 months?

I also think subscribers should have more opportunities to change their username in a 90 day period, and that they should not lose that privilage if they have a warning.

:)

Removal of flood control is the absolute top of the list for me. A bit more PM space and removal of the ads would be a bonus, but the flood control is something that I constantly run into problems with.

* Blogs - I would be interested in a blog as a side note or addition.

* POP3 email - E-mail accounts are so easy to acquire, i have no need for more.

* @neowinmail.net - Ditto

* Even more PM space - I hardly use the PM system.

* Elimination of ads - This would be greatly interesting. Wouldn't this go hand in hand with Faster speed?

* Faster speed - (Y)

So i would say:

Elimination of ads+ Faster Speed

Easy Addition:

Blogs.

I would be interested in seeing some integration with the IRC server. Maybe some sort of custom OCX or flash chat room. I know there are plenty of them out there but personally i think having the simplicity of a Main, Gamers, Software, Forum, & Chat tab would generate more frequent users in between posting on the forum.

[Poll Added]

The second poll is multiple choice but try to only vote for things that you would actually consider paying more for (rather than making it a general wish list).

Better customer service goes without saying. I won't include that as a poll choice.

The quicker removal of warnings would open up a can of worms. I wouldn't want to encourage people to sign up as a way to pay for a lower warning level. I wouldn't want it to seem like we were selling warning reductions. That might seem a bit tacky. I'll list it in the poll for now though.

I forgot to say in my previous post in this thread that for email, Hosted Exchange would be sweet .

1) Yes, that would be cool. Having a dedicated staff member would be a good idea (especially with the current support track record ;)).

2) We do anyway (screenshot wise). Unless we get access to beta.neowin.net ;)

3) Would be cool, but do you really need to post more than every 30 seconds?

Blog - Might use it I have been thinking some cool ideas

Ad-Free skin - I am willing to pay for that!

Removal of Flood Control - That would be fantasic, it does not effect me anymore, since they sync both servers it does not happen so much.

More PM space- Does not effect me.

pop3 - Signed and did use it while Hotmail 2MB and before Gmail you were the biggest.

Hosted email - Might consider it, however as the someone said before, can you really support to a good standard?

Quicker removal of warning - I have never got a warning and I can't see that just because we have a badge means we get less punishment.

More recognition - Would be nice

I voted for an ad-free skin and faster browsing/removal of flood control, but to be honest I don't really care about that. I've donated some money and to be honest the price we pay is a very small amount, so really I'm satisfied with just a badge (and the inbox size subscribers have has come in handy for me, I'm on 51% :p) :)

I honestly think Neowin should be charging more to subscribe. Double the price at least imo. It would still be more than fair. (Y)

When I was looking to subscribe I would have paid up to around ?18 pa. I only had to pay just under ?7

Just had another idea:

How about the ability to slightly moderate your own topics, i.e. if you list something in Neobay and it sells, having the ability to close the thread would be nice :p
