Xbox 360 Ring of Light flashes red

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I bought an Xbox 360 about two weeks ago. The FIRST time I turned on the console, three lights on the ring flash red. The only one that didn't flash was the second quadrant. I crossed my fingers and turned it on again... it worked fine... until now. Today I turned it on and the same three lights flash again. I turn it off, turn it on, works fine. Now I started playing again a few hours ago and this time it booted up fine, but the video was noisy and grainy. I checked the A/V cord was nice and tight. What is up with the console? Is it done? The good news is I DO have until the 15th to replace it from ebgames if the unit turned out defective. I think I am going to go in tomorrow.

My 360 went ###### up yesterday as well. I was playing Project gotham and the console started making a horrible cracking/graunching noise like the belt off the CD drive snapped. I had NO red lights and the console was still booting up fine (but the disk drive didnt work of course). I phoned up Microsoft (well, Argos first, but they just said to ring MS) and had about a 20 minute conversation will someone trying to explain my problem. In the end he agreed that it was a fault with the disk drive and Microsoft will send out a letter with postage information on it, so I can send the console back to them.

Every time I put a disk in the drive now, the dashboard appears as normal but at the bottom where it usually says "play Game", it says "unreadable disk"

I should mention that if you send it back to Microsoft you must send the console only in a plain box (not the Xbox box). I'm waiting on the letter arriving, but they said that it will take around 15 days for them to repair/replace the console.

Edit: My date is 2006-09-04

Take it back right away.

For reference, what is the date of your 360? (check the back of the console above the AV port)

2006/10/24. Hopefully I can get it exchanged today.

I'm sorry to hear that wallynufc. =(

Don't forget to remove the HDD before you send it to Microsoft, no matter what they may say. I've heard of people forgetting to keep their HDD and they never got it back. So save yourself the hassle and be sure to remove the HDD and send only the console.

Swap it at the store. I had mine 2 weeks and it started doing this.

Don't know if it is the same in canada, but I had to ring MS to get a conformation number before the store would take it back. Might be worth ringing the store first

Depending on who you brought it from, take it back and exchange it with them rather than Microsoft.

Microsoft are retarded and often send you a refurbished machine rather than yours or a brand new one. This means you get someone else's repaired machine with known issues already. If your a freak like me who takes good care of stuff it may also come with someone else's marks and dirt all over it. Pretty unacceptable if you ask me.

Well I just replaced mine and the newer one is working real fine. Although, it's not 'technically' new as it was manufactured ten days before the one I just replaced. :p

I've always carried the belief that if it works well for 30 days then chances are it will last you at least a year. Too bad the warranty is only good for a year.

What do typical repair costs for 360's cost out of warranty anyway? Are they reasonable ($50-$100), or would it make sense to just go out and get another console?

The turn around time for their repairs seems awful! Up to 15 days waiting around just to receive the packaging for the defective unit! And then I've heard of up to 3 weeks waiting periods once Microsoft has received the x360 from you... ? They should give you a free year subscription to xbox live after that.

I bet their support make any defect somehow your fault too.

From what I've heard, it costs $140 to get your 360 repaired.

I think the turn around time is a lot quicker in the US and maybe Canada, too. I got my packaging 2 days after I called MS. I ended up not sending it because Best Buy got more 360's in stock the next day and I just took mine up there, so I'm not sure how long it would've taken to get mine back. I've read about people getting theirs back in as little as 5 days, but there have definitely been some horror stories.

Does anyone know:

Is $140 a flat-rate or does it vary depending on what is wrong with the hardware? If the hardware is not repairable do they send you a new 360 for the $140, or do they just tell you it is non repairable and charge you some flat rate to look at it and send back the defective unit?

I don't mind the $140, if I know for a fact that I will get back a working xbox 360 and don't have to shell out another $299 for a working unit.

I recently broke a piece of electronic test equipment (an oscilloscope), and Tektronix charged $120 just to look at it, and sent it back saying they couldn't fix it. That made me pretty mad, but it was a $3000 piece of equipment.
