PiracyX
I got the update earlier tonight. I'm glad my bug has been fixed though which is good, alittle late mind you but good work. I can't wait to see what these maps will be like. I hope they bring out more as quick as they can :)
Smashing Pumpkin
The update for VGA... does that mean if I play GoW with a VGA cable on my CRT monitor in the future at 1280 x 1024 then there will be soem kind of sitortion because I won't be able to get the update, my box is not online as I can't get broadband :( Please reply as to what this is referring to someone. Thanks, Richard.
LOC Veteran Posted January 10, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 10, 2007 I'm so glad they patched the game, because now I can't play multiplayer AT ALL. The game lists the servers for me, but I can't load into any server now. I just sit there on the red loading screen. GG. Sigh, I figured I'd get away from these sorts of issues on a console...apparently not so much. I hope I don't have to wait 2 months now to play again. Thanks, Richard. That was the idea. Prior to this patch all VGA resolutions in the 4:3 aspect ratio contained black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (and that wasn't supposed to happen, since the game fully supports 4:3) so you wound up with a vertically "squished" image. The patch today was supposed to completely fix that.. However from what I've heard the issue still exists with 1280x1024, but I've personally tried 1024x768 and it was fixed.. Sucks that the most common LCD resolution (for computer monitors) is still broken in Gears of War. However, it should be easier for you with a CRT then those with LCD since it can handle lower resolution (such as 1024x768 as I mentioned that works correctly) far better. Btw here's a link to an article concerning the issue: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3156305
Smashing Pumpkin
Hey, thanks for the quick response, but surely I won't be able to play without distortion, even on 1024 x 768 because I won't be able to download the patch. This sucks so badly, if it does work at 1024 x 768 that means I've got to chage the resolution and settings every time I change game, argh! Is the distortion that bad for gameplay? :( Thanks, Richard. Its really annoying as well as I didn't know this would happen so applied the patch straight away. Any way around this anyone?
Smashing Pumpkin
Hmm, so what you're saying is that they released a patch for it and that screwed 1280 x 1024 up... as in it worked fine before the patches? Cos if that's what you mean i should be fine cos I've never gotten any updates or patches on my 360 in any way shape or form! Richard.

Richard. No. What I was saying is that this new patch fixed the VGA problem for all resolutions except 1280x1024 (from what people are reporting, I haven't been able to test this myself). For some reason they missed that important resolution. So it doesn't matter if you get the patch or you don't, you'll have the same problem. But at least with the patch you can use 1024x768 or other 4:3 resolutions until a new patch fixes 1280x1024.

That resolution is still better then 480i/p. I'm sure you've played games at that resolution on your CRT. It doesn't look bad at all (at least it didn't on my old CRT). I originally was having issues, it was not sitting there but it told me I lost my connection to every server I tried to connect to. I then tried it an hour later and everything was fine, although I am now seeing more bugs than I ever did, but that is something I will not bother getting into or else I will just get mad. Horrible Update in my opinion, seems to have made a few things worse instead of better. MadFerIt
These bugs you're talking about.. Are they exclusive to single-player or multi-player (or both)? I haven't noticed any bugs so far, granted I haven't played much of the game since the patch.
Shadrack
So glad they fixed 4:3 on VGA AR. Now it looks great on my computer monitor. 1280x1024 with screen format set to "Normal" works 100% for me. Other people are having problems? DirtyLarry Veteran Posted January 10, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 10, 2007 These bugs you're talking about.. Are they exclusive to single-player or multi-player (or both)? I haven't noticed any bugs so far, granted I haven't played much of the game since the patch. Multiplayer. Not sure about the Single Player. Once I beat in on Hardcore I took a break from it, and have not played SP since. Just a few "new" bugs I have seen while playing MP. I always clear out my pistol at the beginning of the round to get the active reload on it. The first time I did it tonight, at the end of the clip, it shot another bullet when I did not pull the trigger. Did it again, same thing. Repeated every time, same thing, it shot a Phantom Bullet. Definitely have never seen that before today. It did only happen with the pistol, as I tried every other standard weapon, but a phantom bullet being fired is not good. As I said I always have done this, and it definitely did not happen before today. While playing on three different servers today, the game froze, and said something about my connection not being good as other players. I could press B to quit, or I could wait and see if it cleared. I had seen it two times before this patch and I have played MP since it's release, but saw it 4 times just today. The one time it happened for everyone on my team, we could talk, but we were all just there frozen and waited until it unfroze a good 15 seconds later. One of our teammates had been kicked, so that is just weird. Hit Detection is worse than it ever has been, and it was always not the greatest... On server, both teams agreed it seemed the hit detection was not right. They agreed to let us just walk up to them and shoot them, and test out shotgun headshots. I walked about two feet from a guy, had active reload, and hit him 4 times in the head with my shotgun until he went down. Then when he was down, point blank range, shot 3 times in his head. Nothing. Aimed at his Legs, headshot execution. As I said it has always been skeptical, but sincerely and truly it was so bad everyone agreed, and as I said we did our little tests. Granted it could have just been a bad server, but I never saw it as bad as that. Finally, I have never, ever really seen Lag on any match I played before this patch. One match I played today, the lag was there without a doubt, and really, really, really bad. It appears to me that they have tried to make sure that connections were better overall for people. By doing so, from what I have seen so far, they have made it overall much worse. The occasional "hiccups" I used to encounter before are now "obvious issues," and I would rather have hiccups any day. Never-mind the fact I cannot continue to join a good host if I am playing by myself in a ranked match since they eliminated Host name. What I would do before is find a good server, and more often than not that host would continue to host games, so even if I was by myself playing, once I found a decent group of people to play with, even if up until that point they were total strangers, I would continue to play with them. Now, that is all gone. This reminds me of Battlefield 2 patches. Trying to fix certain issues have as a result introduced more issues than there were before. Please keep in mind the only MP I have played for at least the past month is GOW. I know I sound like I am whining, but it is seriously all I have been playing online, so I can say all of the above with 110% certainty it is what I was experiencing. FreqFace
Damn, shame all these problems have cropped up. I'm sure if it's happening to alot of people it'll get fixed quick. MS definately don't want the biggest game on Xbox 360 to be fuxxed. EDIT: I played co-op for the first time today, I never realised how awesome it is! witalit
I think im blind cause i play on my lcd at 1280 and i see no distortion. Am i blind or just not picky As I said the distortion is very slight. If you stand quite far away from an object and look at it you can see it looks like the resolution is wrong for the screen. The object looks as if no Anti-Aliasing is on and it really bugs me. It does not look like HD to me anymore, defeats the object of me having it plugged into my monitor. I don't think im being picky here though as it used to look perfect and now after the update it looks distorted simple, they have messed up. joshwa
Both me and my friend are also experiencing problems with the patch. Nearly every time I tried joining a game it got stuck on the loading screen, and I had to exit to the dashboard. Also I couldn't even make my own games, I entered the game details, clicked Accept, and the screen just flashes and doesn't do anything. I have managed to get into one or two games though.
