Problems with current HDTV, may buy new one

Recommended Posts

Thanks in advance to those who help. This will probably be a long post.

I already have a Sanyo 27" tube HDTV. It has worked fine and accepts 480i/p, 720p and 1080i, yes I know everyone will say there's virtually no difference at 27" but it upconverts 720p to 1080i anyway. Only problem I have is that because it's a CRT, it overheats and will cause two ovals to appear on both sides of the screen. At least, I believe overheating is the cause of the problem though it can be quite cold in my house and they will appear and sometimes it can be quite hot and they won't show up. It is completely random and the size of the ovals varies, sometimes small, sometimes large. The ovals are symmetrical and appear on the left and right side, not the far sides but just to the left and the right of the exact center of the screen. The left side oval seems to desaturate whatever is inside of it, making everything dark white/ gray tinted, while the right oval seems to oversaturate whatever is inside of it, making everything yellow tinted, like pee to be honest.

Anyway, I've also noticed that when I play Gears of War on my 360, and sometimes even when I'm in the dashboard, there is an odd overscanning, if you will. I can't think of a better word than overscanning. It is more pronounced at 1080i than 720p but I have not narrowed it down to the TV, the 360 or both. If I look around the game world in GoW and focus on the screen, I can see a very fast, somewhat thick, white hued line that moves from left to right and is the entire height of the screen. On its first pass, many things on screen seem to have a purple tint, on the second pass, many things on screen seem to have a green tint and then everything seems "normal" for a few seconds. Then the cycle starts over, purple, green, "normal." I have heard of display problems with Gears of War so does anyone have any advice on how to determine whether it's the TV, the 360 or both? I don't think it's present while playing multiplayer but I haven't tested it to be sure. The overscanning isn't usually noticeable when there's action going on but if I look at the sides of buildings while exploring or looking at overhead lights from a distance, I can clearly see what I described above.

Lastly, I may get a new TV anyway and my budget would be in the ballpark of $1100. Many people are excited about the 37" 1080p Westinghouse. I have yet to make a decision. Is there any reason not to consider this TV? The new 42" and 47" will likely be too far out of my budget to consider so I can't concern myself with them.

Firstly, the set you have now sounds like it may be on it's way out. Now, as for that Westinghouse, people like it because it's cheap. However, I really don't like the set. Honestly, they have some pretty decent 32" and 27" sets (though they lack sharpness), but anything larger from them that I have seen is a joke. The black levels almost tend to be nonexistent and backlight bleeding is common. We have the 42" and 47" at work and I just cringe at them.

There is actually a JVC set, the LT-32X667, that I would recommend you looking at. I know it's smaller than the 40" you were eying, but for the money, it's a beautiful set.

Thanks for the post.

I know price seems to be the main reason people are attracted to Westinghouse products. I hear conflicting stories about them as well. Some people say they are terrible quality while some people think they look great. I don't know if it comes down to product quality variation or if some people simply don't know much while others do. I'll drive down to Best Buy soon and see them in the store. There's another store around here that sells them so I'll compare them there as well.

As for the size I am eying for, I am realistic. With only ~ $1100 to spend I know my choices are limited. I'm not expecting a giant screen unless I go with DLP or projection. So if anyone can recommend a TV that is bigger than my current one, good quality and affordable, by all means tell me about it.

I don't have to spend all my money on a new TV. Here's a hypothetical, if someone wants to recommend a $700 30" then I'm willing to listen. Anything that is better than what I currently have and worth my money.

Also, the reason I want 1080p in a TV is because it may double as a monitor for my new computer build this summer. That's the other reason I am considering the 37" Westinghouse. The new build will be used for movie streaming, games, etc. so I was thinking the 37" Westinghouse would pair well with the new computer. Someone I know on a forum I frequent did a review on the 37" Westinghouse and it looked nice but camera shots seem to always make things look better than in real life.

I meant for other people. That's the reason I posted on neowin.

No offense of course, thanks for the opinion. But I was looking for more people to chime in, that's all. ;)

Most other people are probably going to recommend the Samsung, though it's a bit above your price range. We're pretty consistent in these forums when it comes to suggestions. I think there's now a whole band of owners in the UK loving Samsung thanks to these forums lol.

I'll vouch for that. 1 Samsung LCD and 1 Samsung Plasma. They're both great :D
