Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-on Sales

Recommended Posts

Very impressive.

Research firm NPD Group tells Next-Gen that the Xbox 360 HD-DVD movie player add-on has sold about 92,000 units in the US since its mid-November launch last year.

According to NPD's figures, the hardware sold 42,000 units in November and 50,000 in December.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier said that the life-to-date figure indicates a 2 percent attach rate to the Xbox 360 install base. The firm reported last night that life-to-date Xbox 360 sales in the US stand at 4.5 million units.

This drive really a smart idea from M$. Only problem is demand outstripping supply.. I cant find one

for love nor money in the UK... Greedy gits have been buying loads for resell on ebay... for nearly ?200!

A pain considering it only costs ?129.00 and you can connect it to your PC..

My lack of love for the PS3 and the Who>Ray drive diminishes even more...

Surely sold more than what I expected. And now with the backup of the porn industry, HDDVD has all the things needed to win (like... porn).

The smart move was enabling it to be used on the PC.

For E.G. an external Hewlett Packard HD-DVD reader just come out in the UK and is ?350, you can buy the Xbox 360 one with a free film for ?130.

They are in stock just about everywhere I look where I live. But I don't exactly live in a high-tech region.

It seems like every published article I've read has been declaring Blu-ray the winner lately :(. Basically due to studio support. Large studios are going exclusive to blu-ray at the moment. We will see what it looks like at the end of this year... but I can see many families going with blu-ray just because that is all that Disney will produce discs on.

Demand would be even higher if MS had marketed it as being PC compatible as well, I know it is but I don't really see it being sold as such.

I'm probably going to pick one up but I'll use it as a drive for my pc, even tho I have a 360 :p

The article you read was a press release from the Blu-Ray camp. Almost every unbiased source is stating that HD-DVD is ahead and will probably win the format war. Remember a lot of companies aligned themselves with Blu-Ray because Sony made a great argument about installed PS2 base and how the PS3 would be like the PS2 but with Blu-Ray, etc. etc. Once the financial tide starts switching companies will first go dual format and then dump the one that is losing.

Yeah, see, it boils down to each camp wanting to make you think they are winning so you join their side. That is why the Blu-Ray announcement that they had already won the format war was so funny. It strikes of desperation. Someone reads the article and says "Honey, Blu-Ray is winning. Grab the kids and let's go to Wal-Mart and pick up a Blu-Ray player." Of course a more informed consumer would research it and come up with what Spartan just did.

I don't think the porn industry will help HD-DVD as much as it did DVDs since people mostly get their porn online now. It's just not a big of a factor as it used to be.

Yeah, and 80& of the porn 'studios' cant afford real HD equipment anyway :p

I bought the drive a couple of days ago. I'm waiting for my HDTV to arrive next week before I unpack it. I was also glad to see that you still get King Kong with it.

I guess the people having problems finding it are people outside of the USA? Amazon has it for sale and in-stock.

Just noticed:

92k HD-DVD drives sold

92m profit from video service

Yeah, no real relevance but still, just thought it was weird how the numbers worked out there.

(yeah.. that was kind of random.)
