magik
Probably posted somewhere already, but meh... ;) And then the moment of revelation. A few days ago in Las Vegas, Toshiba announced that developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read only) disc with a capacity of 51 gigabytes. The HD DVD format being supported by Microsoft holds 30GB of media while Sony's Blu-Ray has the capacity to store 50GB. Accordingly, this is how they've accomplished the feat:HD DVD discs hold 15GB per layer. In order to reach a dual-layer Blu-Ray Disc-besting capacity, an extra 2GB per layer was squeezed in, for a total of 51GB. Improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, allowing for the boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Lastly, Toshiba explained that the new disc has the same structure as that of a standard DVD and HD DVD, resulting to an almost negligible added cost of adding a third layer. They are aiming to get the approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year. QJDailyTech (more info on 10-layer discs here)
Colin-uk Veteran Posted January 13, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 13, 2007 I dont see the point of that except for backing up data :p I dont think a movie or game would ever take up that much space, would it?

Xerxes
That is great and all, but TDK showed off a 100Gb Blu-Ray disk that is recordable last year (at CES)..let the capacity war begin :p
PiracyX
Sounds great but i wonder how much these discs will cost once they come out.

Anything over a certain amount say 30-50 GB is just excessive for everything but data back-up and maybe a few movies loaded with everything. Just my take on it though :). Ironman273
That is great and all, but TDK showed off a 100Gb Blu-Ray disk that is recordable last year (at CES)..let the capacity war begin :p The difference is what is actually wanted from the public. Having the ability and actually doing it (which goes for this 51Gb HD-DVD also) is a completely different story. However, if the cost is as negligible as they say and it would get them at the same capacity as Blu-Ray they may make a push for it. Case in point: this article is from 2000: New High-Capacity DVD to Hold 22.5GBPrototype holds five times as much as data as current DVDs; ship date not announced. Martyn Williams, IDG News Service Thursday, October 05, 2000 01:00 AM PDT CHIBA, JAPAN-- Sony and Pioneer unveiled at the CEATEC electronics show here this week a prototype optical disc video recorder that utilizes a state-of-the-art blue laser. The development of a commercial optical disc recording system based on a blue laser is a goal being pursued by many electronics makers at present and is seen as the next-generation leap from today's red laser-based systems. Because blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light, 405 nanometers versus 650 nanometers, data can be packed closer together and a standard optical disc can be made to hold more data. DVR-Blue, the system on display at CEATEC this week, can store up to 22.5GB data on a standard optical disc--roughly five times the capacity of the latest 4.7GB DVD-RAM disc. Sony and Pioneer said that is enough capacity to record 2.5 hours of high-definition television, an application for which they think the new system will first catch on when commercialized. The companies, which are working together on the research and development, bought a blue laser for the recorder from Nichia Chemical Industries, one of only two companies in Japan that is capable of producing such a device. Commercial production is a ways off. The prototype was such a recent development that few details were available, and staff from Pioneer said that up until last week they were even unsure whether the prototype would be finished in time. Nightwind Hawk
I dont see the point of that except for backing up data :p I dont think a movie or game would ever take up that much space, would it? It would be nice for a TV-Show DVD set. :) Instead of 5 or so DVD's, just one.
ToneKnee
Why is this in the Xbox360 forums? Games will not be coming out on the HD-DVD.
Rodrigo
Why is this in the Xbox360 forums? Games will not be coming out on the HD-DVD. IIRC there is an external HDDVD drive for the 360. :p But I agree, this could be moved to a better forum.
golazo
Instead of buying a box set we will only need the one disk for our favourite tv shows :) or a whole season of our favourite sports team on 1 disk would be great.

It was all theoretical. Could be mistaken though. Will current drives read the new triple-layer format? As far as I can tell from the article, yes current drives will be able to read the triple-layer format.
