New Xbox 360 Coming Late 2007

Recommended Posts

In a new edition of "Windows Weekly", Paul Thurrott says that a new version of the Xbox 360 will be coming in late 2007 and that only the new 360 will have the ability to use IPTV. In addition to a new Xbox, Paul states a larger hardrive is in the works (28:00)

I'm not so sure about this. How can only the new version have IPTV? Isn't that software based?

Chances are it'll have some kind of Tuner on it, it'll recive on demand IP based video over a Cable network.

at least thats how paul explained it

lol, if you think people got annoyed about the whole HDMI thing, Just wait and see how many more people would be upset if the IPTV thing was true :p

That's what I thought too - will be waiting for official confirm/denial on this.

Sucks that everything that is really great for the xbox is appearing in 2007, hope it was earlier but.. What can we do. It would of been great if they really hooked us up with those for the current 360 owners, "if" it was the same price. But, I think their going the right direction, no matter if they give it to us or not :-P. I really want the HDMI but, don't want to shell out another $300-$400 if it do comes out.

If microsoft were going to make only a new 360 do the IPTV then i seriously doubt they'd have announced the IPTV without announcing the new 360.

Plus IIRC they did use the words (or something to the effect of) that ALL 360's would be able to use IPTV. You don't need a Tuner or anything as it just streams the tv over the net.

Also, instead of a hardware revision, it could just be that all the new 360's from later in the year will come with IPTV pre-installed?

ROBBIE BACH: Well, that just gives you a sense for how video is easy to get to Xbox 360, and we have had tremendous response to that from our Live customers.

Now, the final area where we can bring high-definition to our platform is what we call IPTV. Now, two years ago we demoed IPTV at this show, and really gave one of the early first looks at what IPTV could deliver.

Today, we are now in market with five providers: AT&T, British Telecom, Deutsche Telecom, C-Com in France, and Swisscom. We are doing great work with those companies to roll this out to consumers, and we're also working with 11 other customers and a number of others who are in trial or evaluation.

This market is going to continue to grow, and over the next three or four years is going to become a major part of the TV delivery ecosystem.

So, I want Albert again to take us on a quick tour of IPTV as it ships today. Albert?

ALBERT PENELLO: Thanks, Robbie.

The IPTV demo that you see here is going to unlock the potential of your TV. IPTV, the first thing you'll notice about it is that it's fast. I hate waiting. And with our instant channel zapping, no more waiting a couple of seconds for the channel to change. I get instant gratification.

Another great feature is our improved channel browsing. With our picture-in-picture feature I can actually see what's on the next channel before I change over. This is going to be the next generation of channel surfing.

Now, IPTV delivers everything you'd expect from a great TV experience. I can watch and record my favorite TV shows in standard and high-definition, I can order videos and movies on-demand, or I can quickly search for my favorite programs by actor, title, or director.

Now, I know that some of you may have seen IPTV in the past, but what I can guarantee that none of you have seen is IPTV running on an Xbox 360. (Applause.)

I'm going to bring up the Xbox guide, and I'm going to go ahead and accept this game invite for Gears of War. The bringing together of IPTV and Xbox 360 is going to give me all of the amazing next generation features of IPTV and the rich connected experience of Xbox Live. So I'm going to be able to get game invites, but what's really cool is using a headset I can actually talk with my friends while we're watching TV.

Now, I'm going to start up Gears of War here, and for me, being able to play games on an Xbox 360 and watch TV as an enthusiast, Xbox 360 now does everything I want in my living room. I can play the best next generation games, download movies and TV shows, connect to my Windows PC and access my music and my photos, watch HD-DVDs, and now experience next generation TV programs with IPTV.

This is everything I want, it's all in one box, it's all on Xbox 360.

ROBBIE BACH: Thanks, Albert. (Applause.)

Now, the thing I want to point out is that IPTV on Xbox 360 allows our service providers to really differentiate their TV experience, because now on one box not only can you get an amazing TV experience through IPTV, but you do get all that great gaming experience that is Xbox 360.

This will be available through service providers this year, holiday 2007, that experience available to consumers.

So now that brings us full circle on connected entertainment. We talked about music and the strides we've made there, both on our Windows ecosystem world and in Zune. We talked about Windows Mobile and the progress we've made, and the leadership position we now have, and the strength of our product offering there. We talked about Xbox 360 and games on Windows, and what we're doing to build an incredibly exciting gaming environment across those two systems with our Live service. And we talked about the work we're doing in TV and video to really give customers the breadth of options they want to get the video they want on their system.

The exciting thing about that for me is more choices for consumers, great software, great services, the ability to take their content wherever they want it whenever they want it, and share it with their friends. We're going to deliver connected entertainment over the coming years, and I think it's going to be a very powerful experience.

Thank you very much. (Applause.)

You heard it here first, IPTV on Xbox is real!

Now xbox lovers can enjoy episodes of their favorite television shows from the comfort of their wireless 360 controllers. They?ve added television into the menu in your dashboard. Jesse sat down with the brains behind the feature to talk about multi-tasking. Now you can watch Desperate Housewives and Tyra at the same time. But don?t worry your friends will still think you?re playing Halo.

Ok Spartan so none of the text even hints at a new 360 model being released.

What irked me the most about the MS keynote address at CES was the fact that IPTV was not even demo'd and yet they are touting it as being great. Albert Penello pulls up a Gears of War game and talks about IPTV as a great accomplishment as you quoted and doesn't even bother to show us the integration and feature sets.

At least Sony shows CGI demos to get our hopes up rather than just talking about it.

Personally, I'm looking forward to IPTV, even though I don't know all that much about it.

I know it's internet TV, but what I'm confused about is whether it's a service or a feature. Does it cost additional money, like cable or satellite? Or does it just depend on what you want to watch?

basically if im forced to spend $200+ to get hdmi im going to be pretty upset. It is already disapointing that I can't enjoy my hd-dvds in 1080p. It really is gonna make me hate microsoft if i get punished for being a early adopter after waiting outside for 15+ hours in below freezing weather for my 360 on launch day

I'd have to agree - I also expect when i buy a console i don't have to upgrade that! I buy consoles to get away from the Computer upgrading hell ...

Yeah, i bought a car last year and they came out with a new one this year that is better.

I was soooooo ****ed.

Yeah, but before you bought the car you KNEW there was a better model coming. That's how it is with cars.

Consoles have always been the same pretty much, except some size releases.

Core/Premium X Box 360.

DS/DS Lite.

Two models of PS3.

Am I missing any? This isn't the first time this has happened. If you want differences in the form of downgrades, there's the fact that the smaller version of PS2 doesn't support a hard drive.

edit:

Ok, same models technically, but different packages for the PS3 and 360 originally.

rofl - It's the EXACT same consoles in the '360 packages and the PS3 Package. It's only the Accessories that differs.

The DS isn't technically a console.

okay i must admit...if I have to buy a new 360 to have this feature, I will be quite disappointed. HDMI I could care less about, but this is a feature they made seem at CES that ALL of their current owners could get this. Spartan-X, you didn't really confirm or not confirm if this is true. Is it?

I agree as well, when I bought the 360 I thought "its pretty expensive but I wont have to buy another for several years". However if they do screw the current owners over they can count me out for the "Xbox 720" consoles should not be upgraded until the next gen comes around. All these things comparing it to the PS2 Slim, DS Lite, cars etc. dont really make sense to me. If you have an older model PS2 it still works just the same as the slim even if they added the network port you could buy that for the older one, same with the DS lite. As for cars, its totally different they are upgraded every year but everyone knows that when they buy it. A new model car I think would be more like the jump from the Xbox to the Xbox 360, PS2 to PS3 etc. I want HDMI and IPTV and I am not going to buy another 360 to get it.

Upgrades to inside components are yes, fully acceptable. Meaning an upgraded CPU that is smaller in die size, a GPU that produces less heat, even a smaller casing, etc., is indeed common throughout the life-span of a console. No one is arguing that and/or upset about that.

What we are potentially upset about is introducing a whole new feature that apparently would be hardware based that the early adopters would not be able to use because their hardware is then dubbed inferior. Upgrades introducing a brand new feature, well that is what is unacceptable.

Truth be told, I had no plan to even use IPTV, but I sure in the hell would have liked to have the choice to say Yes Or No to it, and not be told No because the Hardware is not capable.

Everything you said makes sense, I guess we'll see what MS does.

I think they should leave it till Xbox 3 (720? :p )

Glad I didn't buy an Xbox tho, I'd be really pee'd off if this is true.
