Let's try and get some facts straight about IPTV?

Recommended Posts

I know over the past few weeks pre and post CES that people have been complaining that Microsoft are going to be releasing another Xbox360 and the IPTV service won't be coming to their already purchased Xbox360.

Now, of course, I'm only going off my opinion about this and common business practise, but people are really starting go over about it. It wouldn't make any sense for Microsoft to release a Xbox360v2 which only the IPTV would work on. We've known for quite awhile now that another reversion of the Xbox360 was coming out with a smaller CPU (not a faster one, people need to get that straight, Tod said this in last weeks Neowin Newscast.). A Bigger hard drive would be common sense, but you could buy that for your current generation Xbox360?

I feel people need to calm down from rumours which haven't been proven yet.

As for IPTV, I don't see why this would require a new Xbox360 for it to work? Doesn't make any sense.

And another point. Microsoft ain't making this service, they are just making tools so people can use their PC's and Xbox360 to use the service which will be providered by third party, i.e. BT. BT Have been talking about IPTV for the past month, and it was never mentioned it was exclusive to Microsoft.

So please, can people just calm down now? Peoples opinions about this are extremely far fetched and they are getting upset about it. :\

Well Major Nelson has a Blogcast where he talks to a few people. One of them is BIGVip about Xbox 360 IPTv.

In the cast he says that IPTv will not require a new Xbox 360 and it's just a downloaded upgrade like the updates we have all the time. Here's a SS:

All the same except for the TV addition which is just like any update to add new features.

How sweet is IPTv gonna be :)

Also, some food for thought. In the cast, MN asked him since the system is capable of recording 4 channels at once (this isn't the case as it is now and it's up to providers to allow that) would there be a bigger HD for the DVR functions? He kinda hinted at the fact that one will be coming out around the time of IPTv or sold with the new boxes.

Also, some sweet news! I heard from that cast also that since you are obviously on the Xbox 360 while using IPTv you can get game invites, no big deal there. The big deal tho is that you can record TV while playing a game and then after your game is done you can go back and watch your show you were recording!!!! IF that's the case that's totally sweet. NO worries about missing 24 (how sweet was the episodes last night!!!!) anymore as i'll have my DVR setup to record them all and incase i miss a few minutes from the first since my game was still going, i can finish then go back and watch it while it's still recording the end.

What kind of internet connection do you need for iptv? I got 512k so I guess that wont be enough?

Would be pulling it, I would imagine it's possible to get Standard Definition if it's really compressed down..

"Then there is the challenge of getting the necessary bandwidth to the home. With today's encoding technologies, a typical home requires approximately 10-12 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth to deliver at least three discrete standard-definition video streams-independent of any high-speed data service requirements. With the proliferation of HDTV and multi-megabit high-speed data services, bandwidth requirements to the typical home will soon reach 18-24 Mbps"

From what I've read, IPTV will typically come with the broadband service needed. I didn't read the full article posted a couple of posts above me, so sorry if I'm just repeating what was said there.

It's great to hear affirmation that a new 360 won't be needed for IPTV. I was getting a little worried about the Xbox business model (this is my first Xbox system).

Here's some info on that - basically, you had better hope that your provider has fiber optic lines laid in your area or you're out of luck.

Doug Anderson chatted with Microsoft yesterday and managed to scare up some interesting new details about that new IPTV service that is due out for the Xbox 360 later this year. Seems that their partner here in the US will be AT&T (no surprise there), which is rolling out its new fiber optic Project Lightspeed network (though last mile service will be over copper). The service will reportedly have enough bandwidth for viewing 2 simultaneous HD channels and 2 simultaneous SD channels and will require a router with special QoS features that can handle IPTV traffic. Sounds about right, since those are more or less the basic requirements for IPTV, and we figured that getting watching live HD broadcasts on your Xbox 360 wouldn't be as simple as a software upgrade.

Also, I did a little quick searching and here's what seems to be AT&T's current ITPV service, called U-Verse - take a look, check prices and current availabilty https://uverse1.att.com/launchAMSS.do

Just remember - the above may not be at all indicative of how the service will work for the 360!!!
