"Over half" of 360 owners didn't own Xbox 1 - MS

Senior developer says audience is expanding

Microsoft's Chris Satchell has revealed that "over half" of the people who have bought Xbox 360 since its November 2005 launch did not buy an Xbox 1.

"We've sold 10.4 million, but the stat you may not have heard is that over half of those sales are from people that didn't own an Xbox 1," Satchell told GamesIndustry.biz in an interview published today.

"So there are lots of new people coming in, which kind of surprises you. What we're actually finding is that our customer set is broadening, which we think is important."

That's a view shared by Nintendo which is seeking to broaden its target demographic with the DS and Wii rather than simply selling more games and systems to existing fans.

However Satchell's comments are likely to be questioned in some quarters because Microsoft has already publicly admitted that the 10.4 million consoles sold haven't all been purchased by consumers.

Speaking to GI.biz at CES, Xbox boss Peter Moore said that in the context of its own figures, "'Sold' means that we're a wholesaler of hardware and we sell it to a retailer, and that's the important criteria."

Meanwhile, recent NPD Group figures put Xbox 360's US installed base at 4.5 million, with Wii at 1.1 million and PlayStation 3 finding its feet with around 690,000 US owners by the end of 2006.

Whatever the real figure is, the fact that Microsoft is claiming "over half" as new consumers is set to cause concern amongst its console rivals. It's also likely to surprise those commentators who have argued that Xbox 360's early success is down to enthusiasm from the 24 million existing Xbox 1 owners.

i loved my ps2 at the time and never considered an original xbox...then when the 360 came out i decided to get it and now there is absolutely no chance of me ever wanting a ps3.

I absolutely hated the original Xbox -- mainly because of the lack of exclusive games that I wanted. I had a GameCube, didn't own the Xbox, just played it at friends'.

Got a 360 and love it. It's my favorite console in a long, long, long time. I think it's definitely for a PC gamer who wants to get into consoles, though, which is what I'd consider myself.

Before i got my 360 the last console i owned was the mega drive and i harly played it, i just dident like thoes kind of games.

I then turned to PC gaming and fps.

Never seen the appeal in the original xbox looked like a crippled pc.

When the 360 came out i never paied any attension, until i seen it runing in HD at a friends house, also the lull in decent PC games getting relased helped make the decision.

I had a GBC, N64, GameCube, N64, GBC, X360.

I sold my N64 and GBC the first times, then I bought em back lol :D

I never had an XBOX 1, just cos they were big and ugly and I didn't have enough cash for one back then, so I got a Cube which was hot and sexy and cheap, also I Loved Nintendo back then, still do, but not enough to buy a console from hype alone.

I had an Xbox and have yet to buy a 360. My brother has one and it is brilliant, but I am still waiting on some more great Japanese titles before I pick one up. Hey SEGA, where is my Jet Set Radio 360!?

How do they know they didn't?

I think theres a huge difference between this and last gen.

Last time, MS were late, with a bigger (and uglier) console, which cost more, and didn't have the game libary the PS2 had.

This time, Sony are late, and have a more expensive console, with a lot of the games which used to be sony exclusive going multiplatform, and quite a few good 360 exclusives aswell.

I'm hopefully getting a 360 in a few months (depending on exam results lol), and am undecided about the PS3 yet (simply because the money I would spend on that, I would probably prefer to spend upgrading my PC).

I have an Xbox. I only bought it for Halo and Halo 2 (and they are still the only Xbox games I own). It's been collecting dust for a couple of years now :p

Before buying a 360, I'd considered myself a loyal Playstation customer. I owned a PS1, PS2 and PSP, and considered the PS3 my next gen investment.

However, after investigating the 360, the games available and both current and future services, the 360 began to appeal greatly to me. This combined with the downfall, delays, expense and loss of exclusive titles to the PS3, I decided the 360 was my first, and primary next gen console.

One month later and I have to complaints. Good job, Bill.

I got a PS2 first and eventually got an Xbox with like 7 games for $30 from a friend because I was addicted to Halo and got sick of using my brother's. I will eventually buy an Xbox360, not sure about PS3.

I got the first Xbox because I tried PS2 and Gamecube, the original Xbox was a perfect match :). Didn't have live though, but if you get a 360 you gotta have Live is what I say.

Does he use SQL Server? :p With SQL Server 2005, you get 99.99%* uptime. :p

* Not an actual realistic figure

But that's only a small percentage of total units sold that Santa keeps track of during the holiday period. ;)

I can safely say you must be the only person in the world who can say that

You can't safely say that since I also found the original Xbox to be my perfect match.
