Spellcheck.. pretty bad?

Recommended Posts

I find that spell check in Firefox 2 is very very useful, but not very good.. I am not good at spelling, so if I want to spell something I should just be able to type something pretty close to it and it will suggest to me what I wanted to spell. But it sometimes doesn't seems to give me the word I am trying to spell and I always resort to google which gives what I want instantly, am I using it/doing something wrong, or has anyone else noticed this??

I find the spell check to be very primitive. It doesnt have MANY common words, such as "inquiry" and "inquired". Doesnt have the various tenses, doesnt have alternative spellings (ise vs. ize) And worst of all, it doesnt recognise missing apostrophes (such as in "doesnt").

Far from being perfect, it at least help me a lot in English since it's not my primary language.

I just hope it get improved...

Um, yes it does notice missing apostrophes. In your quoted post alone it gives me the option to fix all of your "doesnt"s with its spell check.

Maybe this site will help.

http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/11/firefox...nary-hacks.html

It taught me a few things at least.

And about those letters...

From some Wikipedia stuff about MySpell: "The spell checking is done using the .aff file for the locale together with the .dic file. The .dic file is a list of words along with a group of letters which refer to the affixes found in the .aff file. This saves space because instead of having include all forms of a word, like jump (jumping, jumps, jumped), the .dic file will include the word once and the references to the affixes in the .aff file allow the construction of all the other forms."

  • 2 weeks later...

Instead of misspelling a word, then having to right click look for the right suggestion and click it, wouldn't it be quicker to just learn to spell and type it correctly?

The problem is that sometimes when you dont know the spelling, it's quicker to make it correct it rather than to look up the dictionary for it. Also, a lot of valid words arent in the firefox dictionary and that's just annoying.

With any luck, Firefox 3 will be using HunSpell instead of MySpell, which should improve things quite a bit.

Haha lol you could also try using YourBrain and learn the language out of a book, saves a lot of time eventually.

"YourBrain" wouldn't have made that mistake had you been using spell check. But never mind, not everyone is a genius.
