DrunknMunky Veteran Posted January 19, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 19, 2007 Quite a haunting front cover, but pretty cool imo :D
Ayepecks
Oh my goodness. I wish Microsoft and other companies would stop with these stupid game novel books. I know some people like them, but I can't stand them. They're utter garbage for fanboys to fawn over. Then you always have people saying how a game's story is so uber-intelligent and deep (Halo) when it's not. Just my opinion. I'm sure almost everyone else in this forum will disagree. goji
ABSOLUTELY I DISAGREE!! Don't put down Halo.... its cool.... and its hot.... and awesome... Anywho the story is fun, thats about it. I think the novels, when added to a sci-fi game go great, however when you start doing novels for more real life scenario games (splinter cell) I could care less. I enjoyed the Halo novels. Quite interesting to read how MC and the other members of the Spartan II program came to be and progressed. I'll admit that The Flood wasn't that great in terms of story (mostly action--as followed through by Halo 1) but that could be because of the way Dietz writes. Eric Nylund is a different story though. ;) Sure the books aren't made for everyone. As you said--they're mainly for the fans who are interested into the nitty-gritty details of the plot and backstory. You have your opinions and we have ours. Why not let them make the books? We know they don't please everyone (you) but they probably might to others. Making the books aren't hurting you--only giving the writer (who's a very good writer--KOTOR) a job. And there's no telling if an unreleased product is utter garbage or not. ;)

Did you have a bad experience with one of the novels? I personally haven't read any video game-based novels, but I don't see the problem. I think it's actually a good thing that hardcore fans of a video game will take the time to sit down and read a novel about the game's world. There are already too many negatives portrayed about gamers, and I don't think reading is one of them. Personally, I've been feeling like I need to get back into reading. I haven't read much of anything since I purchased my 360, and I was really getting back into books before I rediscovered my love for console gaming, lol. Ayepecks
I didn't have a "bad experience", I just hated them. I understand why hardcore fans may like them, I just didn't. It's not like they're going to stop making them based on my opinion, I just threw my 2 cents in.

Way to keep an open mind. The Nyland books were amazing, the Dietz book was terrible. I hope this one will be good. Mass Effect looks like it will have a pretty cool story line. I already said I can understand how the hardcore fans like these books. I just hate them. Never had a good read out of any of them.
TheLaughingMan
I got all the Diablo's novel and IMO they are really good, right now i'm waiting on the Sin War: vol 2. To me when they do a novel like this they are gona talk about the history, what the world is like or things the game didn't cover. IDK if anyone here play Diablo2 exp, at the final boss where you fight Baal there is a champion called Bartucs the bloody the first novel of Diablo talk about how he became who he is which is really cool. I guess I could've used a better term. I was just wondering if you hated the fact that there were books made about game universes for easy profit or you just hated those specific books. Personally, the story in the games haven't compelled me enough to go out and buy a book about them. I doubt I'll ever read them.

I don't really have a problem with them creating books based on game universes as long as they're good material, but every book based on a game that I've ever read (I don't know what all some of you have read, so I can't comment on everything obviously) has been pretty horrible. I agree that the story in games doesn't really want to make you read a book about them most of the times. I believe if that were the case, the game is failing in that area (of telling a story).
