College Football

hehe, that's the one thing about college football that will always bug me. the bowl games are always road games for us. so many times i've seen it where the big ten is playing a team in that teams home stadium. sucks for us big time. this goes for teams in the big 12, sec, and pac 10. so no matter where we go, we get screwed. you guys should come up here in play in the snow :p

Well the BCS is pointless, it uses numbers and doesn't understand football like the coaches and the people who pick the USA Today rankings. I know it wont happen until the BCS contract runs out, we need a playoff system. Take the top 10 BCS ranked teams and put them in a playoff. Run down the same bowl games and make the Rose Bowl the championship game every year, I live in So Cal so I am biased. I also believe that USC should be the #3 ranked team in the BCS, they dismembered Notre Dame and Carson Palmer should win the Heisman. You don't do what he did to a great Notre Dame defense without having talent, he has only had one bad game and they lost it. He plays in one of the top 3 confrences in the college, toughest schedule in the nation and they win. And I hate USC, but I know talent and he deserves it, no downsizing to Ken Dorsey or Willis McGehey, they have lots of talent around them. It is kind of like calling Emmit Smith the greatest running back to ever play, no, he had the greatest offensive line in history for about 5 years in a row. Barry Sanders is the greatest and Jim Brown is right there.

i dunno, i still think brad banks is better. palmer has more yards, but a lower YPA. banks can run, palmer can't (banks avg's 5 ypc). banks' qb rating is 166 compared to palmer's 148. palmer's td/int ration is 3.2. banks is 6.25 (unreal). yeah, palmer has racked up a bunch of yards, but when you throw 40 times/game, that's gonna happen. it's all about productivity and efficiency, and banks blows everyone away.

i think a playoff system would help. i think. i have seem a lot of stuff about how it would be just as bad, so who knows unless we try. there will still be controversy over the #11 team (if it's a 10 team field, but it would need to be 8 teams, unles you plan on having byes). lol, they are talking about this on tv right now, brb.

...k, back. lol, like you could tell ;)

so many considerations. they brought up the "worth" of the regular season and bowl structure as 2 keys to a playoff system. i guess we'll see.

Yea, a playoff would be great. It bugs me that the University Presidents always say a playoff system would result in players missing too much class time. HA! Like they care. Ohio State will have played 14 games this season. They only see the $.

If they cared about class time, they would be trying to get rid of March Madness. Players are only on campus for 2-3 days a week during the tournament.

A playoff would give more teams hope, too. Right now, If you aren't 1 or 2, you're SOL. Who would want to play USC or Iowa right now? Not many teams.

I'm gonna have to say that I was disappointed with only 20 seconds of LSU's season. The last drive Arkansas had just put me on my knees. It's sad to feel the other side of the "Bluegrass Miracle" that we had against Kentucky. But I'm pretty sure we'll put up a good fight on our bowl game. As it looks now, we're gonna be at the Cotton Bowl playing against Texas. It'll be a tough game, but I think our defense can handle them....it's our offense that I'm scared of.

Overall LSU had a good season...we dominated GatorZx2's team (for the cost of our starting QB), and we were close to defending our SEC championship. One more game, them another year's worth of waiting to get back into Death Valley on a Saturday night.

I think Iowa is really getting screwed in the bcs. The only reason they are 5th instead of 3rd is the stupid computer polls. Most have iowa 5th and 6th. One computer poll even has notre dame higher than Iowa! Even after their dismantling vs usc. What a crock. But at least Iowa has locked up a bcs bowl. Either orange or Rose from what I hear.

Miami will manhandle OSU. Worst Fiesta bowl game in years. Yeah OSU beat who they had on their schedule, but lately they barely get by below average teams. Beginning of the season, I would have said osu would have a chance. But not anymore.

Wash st will beat ucla, most likely, so we're looking at an Iowa vs Wash St Rose Bowl

Orange Bowl will most likely be Oklahoma/Colorado vs USC

Sugar Bowl will be Florida St vs Georgia

My 2 cents anyway.

The fiesta bowl will not be a one-sided as last years, I can tell you that. No one has scored many points on OSU this year. Miami may win, but they will not put up more than 28 points. We will also have Maurice Clarett at 100% or close. Should be a great game.

You didn't read my post, did you? Miami beat OSU last year by a few points, something like 13 to 9. It will be something like that this year in the Fiesta Bowl. Don't worry, I don't think Iowa could beat them either.

Oh I read your post. It comes from an OSU fan, so it weighs very little. How people actually think osu has a chance cracks me up. And honestly, I do think Iowa could fare better. Given the chance, Iowa could take osu. I'm not a huge believer in iowa being THAT good yet, but i do know they could beat osu.

The only 2 teams in the NCAA that have any chance of beating miami in NC game are OU and OSU. Even though OU lost, when they play their best they could beat anyone in the nation, announcers even said that during big 12 championship tonight...

Osu also hasn't played anyone NEAR Miami's calibur. VTech has one of the best defenses in the nation, and look what Miami did to them. Sure Vtech wrang up serious points, but it's not like osu's offense is anywhere near as good as vtechs.

Hey, no offense, but only Iowa fans could try to remove an 8 foot goalpost through revolving doors of the Metrodome. I live outside Minneapolis and that's the funniest thing here for the past few weeks. :D

We'll never know how things would appear this year, but as my neighbor (an Iowa St. alum, btw) says, Iowa is only good about once every ten years. And, I'm sure he sends his best wishes for that loss.

And I need to make a correction. OSU did not play Miami last year. It was actually UCLA they lost to by the score of 13-6. I have no idea why I thought they played Miami, but my bad!

And Iowa has? Or are you counting ISU?

It's not like Iowa has been tested. OSU did knock off Washington St. and the Michigan game was quite good.

Va. Tech also lost 3 games in a row. Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and West Va. Those teams really don't stand out to me as powerful offenses. (maybe an exception to W. Va.)

Heh, yeah that was hilarious. I thought the dome was all rotating doors.

Yeah Iowa usually has a few years in between great years. Back in the Hayden Fry days, they were always toward the top. But at the end of his coaching career, he kinda let recruiting slip. That's the oddest thing coming from an ISU fan, seeing as how they're only good about once every 60 years. I go to isu, but maintain my iowa loyalty. In fact, I'll root for anyone to beat isu. Even Notre Dame Yeah thats right, ND. I hate the cyclones. :o :D

I will agree with you there. Hayden Fry is up there with Woody Hayes in my book as an outstanding coach.

I've never seen a person like youself rooting for the other team. Man, where I went to college in NC, NC Central University, a small college between UNC and Duke, if you were a UNC fan, you never mentioned or rooted for Duke and vice versa. Pretty interesting area where the colleges are about 10 miles apart.

I'm only an OSU fan because my dad graduated from there and my mother worked in the athletic office when Woody was there. I remember learning to play Trombone in 6th grade and one of the practice pieces was the Michigan fight song, aka the Victor's March, (fairly easy to do). My mother walked in and asked me to stop playing that evil song in our house and explained why. I never even knew that it was Michigan's song.

If someone was isu fan going to UofIowa, they'd have to be an idiot to cheer against iowa. Even just cheering for isu will get you run out of town.

Iowa state is a VERY conservative school, as is the city it's in (Ames). You'd be suprised how many people will say they like my iowa shirt or cap when I'm walking around campus. Only my friends give me a hard time about it. Very odd indeed.

i still cant get over the fact that McGahee ran for 6 td's today against Va. Tech.... that is just nuts. I would still vote for L. Johnson for Heisman tho. ;)

superfula: OSU will beat miami. you say OSU barely beat some below average teams. well then miami barely beat some below below average teams.

miami's defense has to be the worst out of all the teams in the top 15 BCS. they give up points, rushing yards, passing yards, you name it. they couldn't stop rutgers, they couln't stop va tech. they gave up 150+ rushing yards seven times this year. clarett will have a big game, and krenzel will do his usual 12 of 15 for 150 yds thing.

here are some rushing yards/game vs. miami:

va tech: 192

cuse: 154

pitt: 193

tenn: 158

WVU: 363

FSU: 296

UF: 163

miami's offense, on the other hand, has not played a defense even close to OSU's. VaTech does not have one of the best defenses in the nation. VaTech is a below average 4-loss team. The Big East is a weak conference, and so is the SEC this year. That was a majority of their competition.

OSU's defense allowed this year against these teams (this is TOTAL yards):

Wash. St: 271

Penn St: 179

Minnesota: 112

Michigan: 361

All were ranked and have respectable defenses.

McGahee will get shut down. Dorsey will get shut down (he'll prolly through a few picks like he always does as well). I know it's a cliche, but they don't say "defense wins championships" for nothing.

*edit* and this all came from a diehard michigan fan too, so it's about as unbiased as you can get ;)

Here's some stats for you.

Osu has the 3rd ranked rush defense, the 93rd ranked pass defense, and overall they are ranked 9th. Their highest rated opponenets, Purdue is ranked 21st, and PSU, Mich ranked 32 and 33 respectively. What were the scores of those games? Purdue 10-6, Michigan 14-9, Penn State 13-7. OSU put up no very few points against lesser defenses.

Now, Miami has the 73rd ranked rush defense, the 1st ranked pass defense, and overall they are ranked 8th. Their highest rated oppenents, Tennessee 7th, Pitt 12th, Florida 20th, and Vtech 34th. The scores? Florida 41-16 (when florida was good), Pitt 28-21 (still scored 28), VTech 56-45, and Tennessee 26-3. Miami put up much more points against better defenses.

Who knows how well clarett will do. Since osu has NO pass offense, and even less going against the number 1 pass defense, they are a VERY one dimentional team. And what is miami's weakness? Run d. What do you think they will work on? I guarantee you osu wont be able to pass on them. OSU hasn't faced an offensive line as good as Miami's which is probably ranked in the top two for lines, nor have they faced a runner as good as McGahee. No Johnson from PSU isn't that great. All his yards came off very bad opponents.

OSU is the second best team in the Big10. Iowa being first, and I don't even think Iowa could have a chance against Miami. Either way, Dorsey passes all over them. It's a Carson Palmer/ND game all over again. Beutjer (not a great qb) passed for 305 yards vs osu, Navarre (another average qb) passed for 247 yards, and Purdue held Clarrett for 51 yards on 14 carries. In each of those games, OSU was outgained offensively. And in those three games, along with PSU and Wisconsin, they were losing and had to score at the end of the game to win. These are against Average to good teams. Not Miami.

I do think it's hilarious how Iowa state is going to the humanitarian bowl in Boise. Heh. :D

c'mon man, you're a big 10 fan right? you honestly think tennessee, florida, vatech, and pitt are good teams? tenn, florida, and vatech are all way below average. they are all 4 loss teams. they are all meaningless now. however, michigan, penn st. and wash. st. are still at the top even at the end of the season.

be careful how you say "no pass offense". they don't have a big pass offense, but they have a VERY consistent production of about 150 yds/game. they will still get their 150 yds vs. miami. they have big play receivers in gamble and jenkins. they have a very solid backfield both running and catchin. they have the best punter/field goal kicker combo in the nation (very crucial, as it will be the little things that decide).

i think it's funny how much OSU is getting overlooked. every says OSU just barely sqeaks by, but they forget that miami has done the same as well. everyone keeps saying miami hasn't played their best football yet. well i'm sorry, but the regular season is over, you can't keep saying that. a team that hasn't showed their "best football" yet, how many chances do they need? maybe if it's taken them this long to show it, it doesn't really exist...

I think they are good teams. I think any of those teams could beat any in the big 10 save 2, maybe michigan if they have a good day. The big 10 has 2 good-great teams, 2-3 average-good teams, and the rest are just, not good. The Big East teams beat each other up. To me, that is the sign of a good conference. Everyone is even. Where in the big 10 you have 2 teams that won out, which shows me they can beat teams in the big 10. The other 9 have yet to prove that can beat anyone. All they have proven is they can lose to the two top teams. The big 10 is very bottom heavy.

everyone keeps saying miami hasn't played their best football yet. ?well i'm sorry, but the regular season is over, you can't keep saying that. ?a team that hasn't showed their "best football" yet, how many chances do they need? ?maybe if it's taken them this long to show it, it doesn't really exist...

The only way osu could win is if they haven't played their best game. So your statement should paply to osu as well, since they have squeaked by. If you honestly think a team that can barely get by purdue, mich, and pennstate, can hang with a team like Miami, well, I just can't believe you could think that.

EDIT: usually i am a big 10 fan. I am being realistic here. And I am cheering for Miami. I don't think osu belongs in the fiesta bowl.

superfula: you keep forgetting clarett wasn't even close to 100% in those games!

navarre an average qb?? he has a better td/int ratio than dosey, and his completion % is 55.1 compared to dorsey's 55.4%.

not all of johnson's yards came against weak opponents. yes, he avg'd 70 yards vs. OSU, mich, and iowa, but those are 3 of the best defenses in the nation. 70 yds/game avg is not bad. on top of that, he averaged 57 yards recieving in those games. now add that up, and that is a very good game!

the big east is a strong conference?? only the top 2 teams from the big 10 are good? mich and PSU could beat anyone in the big east. so could iowa and OSU. the big 10 has 4 strong teams, and it shows in the polls. if anyone beats themself up, it's the big 10. it's always been that way. tenn, florida, va tech, and pitt have a combined 16 losses. they are not good teams. they each got beat 4 times this year, they are not good teams.

honestly, miami has not really impressed me all year long. i've watched several games, and it always game down to 4th quarter comebacks with them too. they horrible, horrible florida st. team almost beat miami. miami needed a 4th quarter comeback to beat a 1-11(!!!!) rutgers team. they barely squeaked by a 4-loss pitt team. tennessee had like 14 key players injured this year. florida had grossman, who utterly sucked for the first 2/3rds of the year.

i understand you are bitter that iowa isn't playing for the national championship, i understand iowa is a very good team, probably the best team in the nation right now. (Iowa would kill, KILL miami. it wouldn't even be close) but don't be a big 10 hater just because of that. you gotta support the conference man. remember, it's not osu's fault that they are there. they did what they had to do. they do deserve it. iowa slipped early. yes i know it was early, but it still counts for something.

*edit* and after OSU beats miami, won't you want to say "hey, our Iowa team could beat OSU, and OSU beat miami." :p

West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez lashed out at Notre Dame on Sunday after the Irish earned a spot in the Gator Bowl and denied the Mountaineers a New Year's Day game.

I think the Big East is a great league and we can stand on our own. In my opinion, Notre Dame either needs to get in or get out.
