Xbox 360 and Windows XP Connectivity Woes

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to get the media sharing function working for a week now. I have tried the media sharing button on both Zune and WMP 11, but nothing seems to work :(

Currently, I have a Netgear Router (G) to which I have my computer and my 360 connected. I have run through the "test connection" button on my 360, but it always comes up with "Failed" for Computer. I do have a couple firewalls (Windows & McAfee) and I have checked both of them and all the ports needed for the media sharing functionality are indeed open and have all the required permissions. Any ideas guys? I even tried looking for Windows Media connect 2.0 but have found it difficult to find.

Any help?

Go into Windows Services (control panel, administrative tools) and make sure "SSDP Discovery" isn't disabled, also check that "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" isn't disabled. I had this problem the other day on my machine and doing that fixed it.

Also the obvious things make sure your routers upnp is enabled... if none of that works forward the media sharing ports on your router... doing it on a software firewall is useless if you got a hardware one (router) blocking it.

Make sure the xbox is on when you switch media sharing on in media player 11.

1. Make sure that your firewall is set to all the connect to the XBOX

2. Make sure you have downloaded the extender

3. Make sure one your 360 sees the media center you enter in your media / xbox code

You need Media Connect, you can get it from Windows Update if you do a custom install, I don't think WMP11 can handle the 360 by itself.

That is the older way that Microsoft suggested to connect a PC and an Xbox 360, now with WMP11/Zune you can enable sharing with the Xbox 360.

Try turning off the Windows firewall and connect. If it still fails, try turning back on the Windows firewall and then turn off the McAfee firewall and connect. If it still fails then turn off both firewalls and try connecting.

Post back with your results.

Figured it out:

1) Put all the exceptions XBOX asks you for in both the firewalls

2) Uncheck the box "Don't Allow Exceptions" under windows firewall

3) It works like a charm

Thanks guys!
