The Whole Memory Leak

Recommended Posts

Alright, you all know about the leak, some people it is a hassel and some not.

No matter if you can notice a difference firefox uses a crap load of resources and cpu power.

I just got a new top of the line system and now firefox is using around 230,000kb

that just shouldn't be...

how long has people been complaining and noticing this, since it started right? Why have they not fixed this problem yet? I need to know, or any information on this.

It just sucks that it uses so much.

Dude, you can not say you just got a "Top of the line" system and then complain about a 230MB memory issue. geez! you should have a min of 2GB if it's top of the line! so stop complaining

I noticed recently Firefox can use up to that amount or more, and it's crazy.

However if you have 1GB or more of ram it shouldn't be an issue, but a browser shouldn't use that much ram in the first place.

You want an answer from Mozilla?

It was actually given quite some time ago, maybe not with the official "Mozilla Provided Answer" seal, but still from one of their developers:

http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/ben/archives/009749.html

Also, before one say this is "leak" is a problem, does it cause excessive swapping or making your system unresponsive when using Firefox or other apps? If not, it's just about your memory coming to good use as a cache. It's better used cached than not at all. If it is a problem and you suffer from this other than by some numbers in the Task Manager, you should try adjusting the cache as described in that link. That link also describes how Firefox will try to use more memory if you have more RAM installed in the default setting. Also, as you diagnose, first try to disable all your extensions to see if one of them had a memory leak.

I get what you mean, Firefox is currently taking up 130Mb here.

You also have to think about the extensions, themes and other bits and bobs.

Have you ever considered another browser? Flock is meant to be good.

See I leave mine running all the time, and it keeps adding up, i just restarted and used that tweak from the above link

and its not at 63,000, but will most likley add up again.

and yea thats exactly what I mean, yea I have enough memory but it shouldn't be using that much anyways.

I'm not even using any extensions or themes themes and it uses more than 100mb at times

I'm still using IE7, no other browser has made me happy over that.

Like I am a big time Firefox fan, I could never go to anything else ever again, no matter how good another browser would get, and I think because of the memory its harder, I have no problems running it of course, but I'm not just complaining for myself, cause my old system had major problems running like other people do.

If the memory use bugs you.....add a new boolean in about:config..

type "about:config" (without quotes) in the address bar.....click 'go' or 'enter'...

right-click anywhere in the page.

create a new 'boolean'

in the box that shows up, type "config:trim_on_minimize" (without quotes)

then set it the value to "true"

Restart FF (may not be necessary)

Now when you minimize FF, it will release a load of memory.

It's not about the amount of memory the user has, a browser just shouldn't use that much memory.

I seriously do not think you should use FF simply because you are a "fan". I use Opera and unless another browser can show me that it meets my needs better then I'll swap. FF isn't for everybody, and if something bugs you then you should consider whether not it's worth it to change browsers.

Firefox for me is currently sitting on 145MB of RAM usage (that's a good thing), you want all your memory used, what's the point of buying 2GB of ram if you never use more than 512MB of it?

Anyway, saves thrashing the VM RAM.

I honestly don't see what the memory problem is. I used to have issues in 1.5.x.x, but not anymore with 2x. I've got loads of extensions, lots of rss feeds, many bookmarks, and always 5+tabs open and so far.... my memory hasn't crossed 90 mb (usually hovers around 60-80). And I've had this setup since fx2 came out(novemberish?). I think people's profiles are faulty or they're using bad extensions.

that excuse's been given every time someone complains about the memory usage. Yes it takes up memory, but not a lot. The browser does have a lot of bugs that causes the memory to be so high, and it's being fixed slowly.
