Helping a friend with a strict NAT

Recommended Posts

Sorry, had to post this question as well, Neowin usually always has an answer :p. My friend is using a Linksys BEFSR41 ver 4.1 or 4 in connection with a Speedstream 4200 modem with Alltel DSL. He normally plays on Live fine, and we hook up in Halo2 all the time. When we tried to co-op GoW the other day, that's when this problem became an issue because neither of us could host for the other.

I thought it was a simple fix. I went into his router, and went to the DMZ settings. I put Enable and then his Xbox's IP (.101). Shouldn't the DMZ open every port on that IP? What else is there to do for him if the DMZ doesn't work?

If you need anymore information just ask. Thanks!

that's pretty weird, that should work if you DMZ it. You gotta check those DSL modems tho cuz most of them these days come with a firewall built in. That's prolly what's causing your "STRICT" setting. The Router is uPnP capable so the Xbox would open the right ports but it wouldn't do that for the modem too. Log into the modem and see if you can turn off the firewall.

Yeah, some DSL modems tend to act like routers, which causes the "strict" nat. You may have to set the modem up for bridging.

Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking. At the moment though, when I tried to go into his modem via his computer by going to www.windstream.net. From there, I clicked on Broadband Check-up Center in the top right, where you can change your firewall level (I thought his was already set to off, on the modem). Currently though, Windstream is being stupid, if you try to access that Check-up Center, if won't accept any of my browsers (doesn't support anything that is IE 7 or based on IE, Firefox doesn't work either).

So I am kind of stuck at the moment. Any other suggestions or is that much pretty what it should be? Thanks!

I don't think you're supposed to log into his modem through a webiste, i'm pretty sure you need an IP address. I'm guessing the modem's IP address is 192.168.2.1. Try it, see if it works.

usual ips for routers are:

192.168.0.1

192.168.1.1

198.168.1.254

but then again it could be anything :p

i had a problem play COD3 online, it would never find servers to play on, problem was simple to fix, Enable DMZ and then open ports and port forward.

If the modem is on the other side of the router (WAN side, as opposed to the computer's LAN side), then I'm guessing he won't be able to access the modem from his computer.

The fastest way to check the internet line is to connect the 360 directly to the modem, and see if that works.

And if settings in the modem needs to be changed, you may have to connect the computer directly to the modem too.

Thanks for the DMZ idea, but as I said above that didn't work.

I know the whole accessing the modem through the Internet, sounds weird but ever since our Alltel DSL changed to Windstream it has been this way. Alltel used to have a downloadble package that ran on your computer that let you edit the modem, and now basically all those settings are what I'm looking at in the Windstream site.

I'll try accessing his modem naother way in the meantime, I'll see what I can find about the Siemens Speedstream 4200.

Here is the link to access the modem (they must have just fixed it today, because now it works with IE 7). So I will hopefully report back tomorrow after looking at the settings at my friends house.

i access my router by typing in a URL, so i guess this is basically the same idea. and i have a netgear modem/router.. i can log in with the normal 192.168.0.1 or www.routerlogin.com and it works

as for help i dont know what to suggest other then what has already been said

URLs will work for some routers if they are coded in the software. Since the router also acts as a DNS when you type the certain URL the "hosts" file coded into the software will redirect it to the IP of the router.

backup the settings from your router/modem and bring it there and upload it to his and see. Bring yours too...
