goji
In this interview with EDGE magazine, Chris Butcher of Bungie Studios has publicly admitted that Bungie committed many mistakes in the development of Halo 2. Comparing the time dedicated to polish Halo and its sequel, Butcher said: "We miscalculated, we screwed up, we came down to the wire and we just lost all of that. So Halo 2 is far less than it could and should be in many ways because of that. It kills me to think of it. Even the multiplayer experience for Halo 2 is a pale shadow of what it could and should have been if we had gotten the timing of our schedule right. It?s astounding to me. I f*cking cannot play Halo 2 multiplayer. I cannot do it. And that?s why I know Halo 3 is going to be so much better. This is the first time that Bungie acknowledges some of the issues found in Halo 2 such as the cliffhanger ending, weapon balancing in multiplayer, among others. magik
Been saying this all along. The fact that you can start an online party and then select Co-Op but not actually play it online with friends shows that they had to do some last second cuts. But I'm glad it happened, because I'm sure Halo 3 will be that much better because of it. :D
bdsams Veteran Posted January 23, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2007 halo 2 was a good game, but the online had so many glitches/hacks which is why i think they are doing the beta, to hopefully prevent what happend to halo 2 online to halo 3 multiplayer! id love to play the game online, but the serious amount of modders 100% ruined the game, and thats how halo 2 will be remebered as "the game that got hacked"
goji
Other than the obvious "hook" in the topic title, this is a GREAT read about the struggles and inner workings of an organization. For what its worth, Bungie is a great studio for what it has accomplished, not the games per se but the synergy and the collaborative effort that exists within their team. Kudos, kudos! They had to ship the discs cause, you know, you couldn't download content on the original Xbox. The online experince is still good too. Maybe you'll find a modder in every 1 out of 20 games, but it doesn't matter. Just leave the game, join another, done. I wouldn't say the modders ruin the game 100%. spenser.d
This is not the first time Bungie has admitted to screwing up bigtime. That subject is one of the main themes present on the Halo 2 LE DVD. This is very old news. -Spenser
Shadrack
how does setting the bar low on Halo 2 = Halo 3 will be much better? Of course it will be much better...they set the bar low, so it will be easy for them to make it better. I was taught to set the bar high.
Heyo
Why do they say the cliffhanger ending for H2 was an "issue"? I've never played the Halo games (well maybe the first for 15 mins) but I read up on the story on Wikipedia so I wouldn't be lost when H3 comes out. I thought the cliffhanger ending (as it was described on Wiki) was quite good!
Spartan_X
halo 2 was a good game, but the online had so many glitches/hacks those were not bugs... at MS we call that "random features"   :p

Skiver Veteran Posted January 24, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2007 i still found halo 2 SP quite enjoyable...i can see that they could have made it better but i still enjoyed it, and i was really looking forward to the MP as i loved teh MP on the pc...however i do feel they let themselves down on that one...the games were wierd and just didnt seem to be anything like the first one which i enjoyed! i hope they do make halo 3 alot better especially the MP
5Horizons
Well, at least me and Bungie can agree on this :p All my friends play Halo 2, but I just can't seem to get into it. Part of that has to do with me sucking horribly, but I don't usually suck that bad at games so I don't know what the deal is. Here's hoping Halo 3 is a lot better, since I'll probably have to get it ;)
OhMuffin
I loved Halo 2, but I agree that it could be better. The SP was "fine", it didn't blow me away as much as Halo CE. The MP was excellent, and super fun... Minus the hacks/mods/standby/suer jump/other glitches. I can't wait till halo 3 :)
AlphaPrime
I prefer Halo 2 to Halo 1 in both SP and MP. But there were way too many exploits in the online multiplayer. What's worse is that it took Bungie nearly 6 months to fix most of them. But in those matches without cheaters it was great.

magik
How do these people cheat in Halo 2? (I don't play online much) Xbox is a closed platform? With a modded Xbox people are able to access the hard drive and thus the downloaded maps. A hex-edit here an inject there and viola, you ruin the game for everyone.
Chadwick
my biggest fear is that they are going to add too much or change too much. halo 2 is great due to its simplicity, imo I'd prefer halo 3 to be halo 2 with better graphics and maps. I feel nothing multiplayer wise is missing.

goji
And legions of people are screaming for Halo 3 to be just like what Halo 1 was and Halo for the most part is maybe? I thought about it, so many people hopped onto the Halo Nation bandwagon with H2, can Bungie really afford to shake something up if so many people are "used" to the way the game plays? Would the casual gamer tell the difference in the nuances in game play etc? Guess only time will tell.
acies
I loved Halo2, am no halo maniac, I just thought it was well above the average game, and great fun. It's the only game I feel I could play with my friends who don't game. People take games waaay to serisouly now-a-days. Just enjoy them ffs. Bungie didn't need to say this, there game was excellent. The most common ones like dummying and standby could be done with any Xbox.
