Smashing Pumpkin
Okay so I think I've got the software on the PC sorted to connect to my 360, now I just need to buy an ethernet card and cable. Is this cheap (?4) card of amazon alright for connecting to the 360? ?4 Ethernet Card on Amazon Then just a basic ethernet cable should suffice right? Nothing special required? Thanks Richard xxx
acnpt
You probably know this already but check the back of your computer to make sure you don't have an ethernet port already as many motherboards have em built in.
Smashing Pumpkin
It's an old PC that I'm only going to use for streaming media to my 360 as they're in the same room so it doesn't have an ethernet port :( Also if I got these would I be able to link up my old PC to my new PC and then just, transfer files over them, like send all my music files straight to the old PC via the ethernet cable? Thanks for your help Richard xxx

Jeston Veteran Posted January 24, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2007 Yeah if you have a router/switch/hub. If you don't, you'll need a crossover cable to connect the Xbox or another PC directly to that PC.
Smashing Pumpkin
A router? Can I not just plug one end into the old PC, one end into the new, and then transfer the files. Then when I'm done connect one end to the old PC and one to the xbox to stream media? Sorry that I'm painfully uneducated on this subject, I do thank you guys for all your help :) Richard. Smashing Pumpkin
^ What? I just thought the cable plugged into the sockets and that was it. I don't know what a crossover switch is so you'll have to explain it to me please. Thanks Richard.
h3xis
For a second I thought that was ISA. I've not seen a PCI NIC with pins that far apart in a long time.

I just thought the cable plugged into the sockets and that was it.I don't know what a crossover switch is so you'll have to explain it to me please. That is it. It's just a different cable than a standard ethernet cable. The term crossover comes from the fact that there are wires that need to be switched on one end to allow to similar devices to talk to each other. It's not a switch, just a non-standard ethernet cable. Edit: Here you go
