Should I buy a XBOX.....

Recommended Posts

Should I buy a XBOX 1 from my friend for $60?

It comes with the following: XBOX, 1 XBOX Controller, Cables, 3 games (Halo 1,Star Wars, and Roller Coster Tycoon) and thats it.

So should I?

If you guys say I do and if I do and if I was to get XBOX Live for it (Gamestop said I can for $50 for 12 months) when would XBOX Live be discontinued for XBOX?

if you're bent on those specific games then go for it, she's a nice machine overall and there's a big library of titles to choose from.

if you're looking for longevity then forget it...Xbox has been discontinued to all intents and purposes.

Not for another few years I would guess, maybe even never. Servers and bandwidth really mean nothin to Microsoft.

Modding is strictly illegal for Xbox

See that's where I disagree. I paid for the hardware I should be able to do what I want to it. Now if it's to play downloaded games or such then I can see but I like the idea of a media center setup.

If you're buying the X-Box Live! pre-paid card from GameStop then you should be able to use any means that they accept to transfer funds. Online a subscription is bought using a credit card.

only reason i bought mine, is becuase there cheap now, and becuase i wanted to try my hand at modding, and becuase of the tons of features you can get after, like emulators, streaming movies/pictures/songs of your pc network, you can watch youtube videos....watch dvds without the dvd package, even though i have it.

pm me if you get it and want to mod it, i did it to mine, works 100%, i got all the links and shizzle.

if you plan on getting it to play on xbox live, forget it, chances are you'll get banned, i did it to mine becuase im not going to get xboxlive i just wanted to stream movies and such.

there are 3 ways to mod an xbox: a modchip, a softmod, and a tsop mod. if you mod it with a chip (which isn't too easy and costs some money) a lot of chips have off switches etc. which will let you use xbox live with the chip on. (my xecuter x3 chip, for instance, turns off when you hold down the power to turn it on instead of just pushing it). however, modding it via software is a lot simpler as you can simply boot off of a game and load a special save file called a softmod (off of an action replay or usb flash drive with a usb2xbox adapter) to use it modded. that way isn't convenient, at all, if you use modded stuff a lot. if you know how to solder, though, you can solder a wire across 2 spots on the motherboard and then flash its own bios chip with a special bios which is called a tsop mod. you can't turn a tsop mod off, though, without flashing the original bios back on and thus can't play on xbox live with a tsop mod. all in all, i'd recommend a softmod since it's the easiest (albeit least convenient in the long-term) and cheapest way. (a usb2xbox adapter is like $10+shipping if you don't make one yourself which is very easy and only requires a usb extension cable, xbox controller breakaway which costs like $5 at gamestop, and a pair of wire cutters and strippers or scissors if you're careful)

about the legality: a modded bios is technically illegal, since it's reverse-engineered from the microsoft bios but from what i've heard, the most they ever have done against modders is make it harder to mod, ban modders from xbox live, and not provide tech support to modders.
