It says its for "new" users, but I was not aware of this and I've had AdAware for years. I downloaded the file in case I might need it some day. Lavasoft also said today that version 6 is only a few days away. Of course, they had said about December 1 so let's hope it will be out soon. Please read the following: There are some data mining programs out there that go as far as changing the Winsock (see below) during their installation. When the data mining components of these programs are removed it sometimes leaves the computer unable to connect with the internet. In those cases we provide a tool that will repair the Winsock, it is available for download here: -digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndn Another version is available from Cexx.org here: www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip The major contributors to this problem are CommonName, New.net, and Webhancer, however there are others. If you are about to remove any of those, or are in question, simply download one of the files listed above and store it in your Lavasoft Ad-aware folder in case you should ever need it. If after the removal of the data mining components leaves you unable to connect to the internet then you will need to run that file. Instructions for using the Winsock fix. The file is zipped when downloaded, if your OS does not open zipped files you will need a tool to do this such as WinZip. You can get the free evaluation version here: www.winzip.com/ddchomea.htm QuickZip is an excellent alternative to WinZip that's freeware: www.geocities.com/lycj/qzip/info.htm Simply unzip and run the fix, then your connection should be repaired. If that won't work, extract a fresh copy of Wsock32.dll from your Windows CD-ROM to your Windows\System directory. Some Web3000 installations do modify this file, which can result in the loss of your internet connectivity if the foistware is removed improperly or incompletely How to extract files in Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP -service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen..... Winsock, simply put, is what your applications use to communicate with the internet and other networks of computers. Before using Ad-aware to remove the targeted components, make a backup of the event. This way you can choose to undo any of the actions that were taken.
