512kbs Live?

Recommended Posts

I've just found out that in my area (the middle of nowhere) I can get 512kbs broadband, would Live support this?

Also would I experience lag on games etc.?

Thanks

Richard

Fine mate :). Unless you plan to host then you will have to find out the upload.

You probably will have a little lag if you are in the middle of nowhere, but it shouldn't be too bad.

It'll support it for sure... You'll just have to deal with slow downloads (if you do plan on downloading demos)

I never used live on 56K, just can't wait to play online cos I never thought I'd be able to :D

Wait, now I should get a HDD... I need money!

EDIT:

Do I run a cable from the phone socket on the wall to the 360, or do I have to go thru my PC or what

I too live in the middle of nowhere and I can only get right above dial up @ 128kbs! :( I have had some lag on huge halo maps 14+ people but never any for GOW or Burnout so if you are @ 512 you should have no issues

Sweet, much love to the middle of no where crew toasty.

I see I'm going to have to research this broadband live business.

I'm not even entirely sure what a router is what it does or how much it costs, nevermind how to use one :(

Hmm, I have been having nothing but problems lately with GoW on Live. Don't know if it is just the host or my connection. Just did a test on broadbandreports.com to check my upload and here's what comes out.

<a href="http://speedtest.dslreports.com"><img border=0 src="http://www.dslreports.com/im/22642035/96960.png"></a>

If that image doesn't work, I got about a 155kb download with a 40kb upload. How much will it lag if I try to host a small game (if I can ever get hosting to work), with about 6 people total? Thanks.

NOW THATS A REACTION. I know it works because a friend of mine has 512kb broadband :). Right so you want to use your PC and 360 online correct? Then a router would be nice.

Heres a small diagram I made to show you:

You can get routers with DSL modems built in, but, they are not upgradable when it comes to the time you can get 50mb broadband ( like my cable provider will next month).

The 2nd option is to buy another Network Card for your PC and go through your PC BUT your PC will always need to be on for the internet to get to your 360. Take a look:

Hope this gives you an idea, if you have an instant messenger, PM me your address and I can walk you through this 1on1 :).

if your 360 and PC are close to each other there's this new method i've devised, called the Unplugging the Wire and Plugging it Into the Other Machine Scheme. works every time!

Hey guys, last time I looked at the console settings there is an option in network configuration (or something like that in the Xbox 360) that asks you for your username and password for DSL.

So I suppose you could just connect the modem to the 360, but you will need to be switching the modem between your PC and your 360 if you don't get a router.

Wow, thanks for the help, the diagrams are pretty decent.

So, it looks like I gotta buy a wireless router, the phone socket is downstairs, so is the main PC.

So I plug a wireless router into the phone socket.

Then I need some wireless USB adaptors, 1 for each PC and one for the 360?

Yes, what I would do then *if* you want to use wireless is place the modem and router downstairs with wireless. Then you will need a Wireless Adapter for the 360 (UK Retails at around ?55) and then if you have ethernet an ethernet (or even PCI if you or someone you know can install it) wireless card for your pc.

Another option would be to get a longer telephone cord and lay it following from the socket to the room upstairs. In the UK it can be upto 15Metres without seeing any speed decreases. It is upto you, personally I don't like wireless too much but it's user preference.

maybe a pair of these?

You could just plug a switch/hub into one of them... or on ebay ive seen a 3port version.

Those usually only work with PCs and can be poor as they also usually need your electrics on one circuit and some houses have 2. Another issue with them is they can sometimes cause interference. I personally have a set and haven't used them a week after purchase as I hated the dam things.

Not much good for the 360--may aswell wait for a router. (I think 1 pc must be on at all times if I remember and they need drivers so wont work with 360--unsure though).

:s I suck at getting my head round all this.

I'm not too fussed about internet on the upstairs PC so just on the downstairs one and the 360.

So I need a modem which I should get with my broadband service if chosen correctly, then that needs to go to a router, I then need a wireless adaptor for the 360 (does it have to be official? That seems really expensive!) and one for the PC.

I think the PC and the 360 are definately more than 15 metres from the Phone Socket, so wireless will be needed to keep speed up?

This is gonna cost a lot isn't it :'(

Thanks

Ok the modem NEEDS to be ethernet, so you will have to check with the ISP. Next you will need a router that takes an ethernet WAN input, NOT one with a built in modem. Next a wireless card for the 360, I have only seen the official one in stores so not sure if theres a 3rd party one. And last, if you plan just for the PC downstairs to have internet you can just got wired to it, most routers include a CAT5 cable so if your PC is near the router your fine.

Router (NO Built in Modem)

Modem WITH Ethernet

Wireless 360 Adapter

That should do the trick. In the UK that would cost about ?120 - ?150 for the right kit. Unless your ISP gives you an ethernet modem then it would cost about ?90-?120.
